Description

No. 879,998. PATENTED FEB. 25, 1908. v. J. AUGIR.-
NOVELTY DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED AUG; 12, 1907.
lllllllll llm ATTORNEYS VIOLA J. AUGIR, oF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.-
NOVELTY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1908.
Application filed August 12. 1907- Serial No. 388.090-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIOLA J. AUGIR, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Novelty Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to novelty devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class adapted for use as a pencil sharpener and which may be employed as an advertising medium and as a desk ornament; a further object being to provide a novelty pencil sharpening device having an interior chamber adapted to receive shaving and dust produced by sharpening a pencil.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved pencil sharpening novelty device; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a side view of a pencil sharpener shown in section in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modification; Fig. 5 a view similar to Figs. 2 and 4 but showing another modification; and, Fig. 6 a transverse section on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I provide a pencil sharpening device which is made in the form of a barrel, and which comprises a body portion a of wood, or any other suitable material, provided in one end portion with a chamber 1) which opens through said end and is closed by a detachable cap 0, the end of the body portion at, opposite that in which the chamber 1) is formed, is provided with an opening (1 which communicates with said chamber and opens outwardly through said end of the body portion of the device and'in which is. secured a conically formed sharpener e of well known construction, the larger end 6 of which is directed outwardly.
When the pencil sharpener e is secured in position in the opening (1 as shown in Fig. 2, it forms a supplemental chamber d the outer end of which is closed and the inner end of which communicates with the chamber 1),
and said pencil sharpener is provided in one side with a longitudinal slot 0 which communicates with the supplemental chamber d and at one side of which is the blade (F.
In sharpening a pencil with this device the end of the pencil is inserted into the open larger end 6 of the pencil sharpener e and is rotated in the usual manner, or the pencil may be held stationary and the pencil sharpener may be rotated, and in this operation the shavings and dust produced enter the supplemental chamber (1 and pass into the chamber 1) and are collected therein, and may be removed therefrom whenever desired by detaching the cap 0. The cap 0 may be connected with the body portion a in any desired manner, as for instance, by a slip joint as shown in Fig. 2, or by means of a screwthread.
In Fig. 4, I have shown a modification in which the body f of the pencil sharpener is made in the form of a bottle, and the opening of the chamber 1) is closed by an ordinary plug or stopper g, and with these exceptions the construction shown in Fig. 4 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In Fig. 5, I have shown another modification in which the pencil sharpener comprises a bottle-shaped portion f the same as shown in Fig. 4, but in this form of construction the opening d formed in the end of the body portion opposite that in which the chamber 1) is formed is composed of two conical parts 72. and i separated by a diagonally arranged blade 7', and the larger end of one of which opens outwardly as shown at 1?, and the larger end of the other communicates with the chamber 7) as shown at h and in sharp ening a pencil with this form of device, the
end of the pencil is inserted at 07 and rotated, or the pencil may be held stationary and the sharpener itself be rotated.
Although, I have shown and described but two forms of my improved pencil sharpener, it will be apparent that various other forms thereof may be adapted and the said sharpener, or the body portion thereof, may be made of any desired material and a pencil sharpener made in this manner may be employed as a paper weight or advertising device and for other purposes, and the body portion thereof may be ornamented, if desired, in any preferred manner.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
, tion thereof which opens outwardly through 1. A pencil sharpener, comprising a body 1 portion having a chamber in one end porsaid end, and means for closing said opening of said chamber, the other end of the body portion being solid except for a longitudinal opening formed therein and which communicates with said chamber and which 2. A pencil sharpener, comprising a body having a chamber, in one end portion thereof which opens outwardly through said end, l
and means for closing said chamber, the other end portion of the body being solid eX- cept for a longitudinal opening formed there= in and which communicates with said chamber and which opens outwardly through said end, said opening being provided with means for sharpening a pencil.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 9th day of August, 1907.
