Description

LUCY E. ANDREW s.
Safety-Pins.
N'0,157,981. Patented Dec.22,1874.
Vii 'v Inventor 5% M M QA UNITED STATES PATENT OrFIoE.
LUCY EMMA ANDREWS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,981, dated December 22, 1874; application filed October 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCY EMMA Annnnws, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented a Fastening for Pins, Brooches, and other ornaments; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suflicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.
Myinvention relates to a novel device, which has for its object the more complete securing of articles of useorornament, such as brooches, cuff-pins, and all articles upon which such a fastening may be useful or necessary; and it consists in the use of two or more pins, which may spring from and turn upon a single hinge at one end of the pin or brooch, and the points of these pins may be sprung so as to enter a slot in the holder at the opposite end, after which each pin is held in its own socket and independently of the other.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my fastening. Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
A is the body of a brooch, cuff-pin, or other article of ornament or use, which may be made of any suitable shape and style. Beneath this outer body the pins B B are secured preferably to one hinge, as at O, and these pins extend across beneath the bodyA, parallel, ornearly so, to each other, and at some little distance apart.
At the opposite side of A from the hinge O is formed the holder D. This holder consists of a cap having a slot, 0, in its center, into which the pins B may be pressed, one after the other. Beneath, the cap is hollowed out, or so formed as to provide two sockets, z t, at a distance apart equal to the distance between the pins in their ordinary state, so that, when they have been pressed in through the slot 0,
they will, by their elasticity, separate, and each one will then be retained by its own socket, independent of the other.
The sockets 'i imay be made in any convenient shape, and should be slightly roughened or corrugated upon the inside, for a better retention of the pins.
By this construction and arrangement I am enabled to give a great security for valuable ornaments and pins, without in any material manner affecting their shape or interfering with their external ornamentation.
I am aware that double pins have been used, as shown in the patents to Henry G. Strong, January 2, 1872,-and Lavinia H. Foy, April 9, 1867. I therefore do not claim, broadly, the use of two pins.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fastening for pins and dress-ornaments, consisting of the cap D, having the slot 6 and the sockets i i, or equivalent devices, in com bination with the plate A and the parallel pins B, hinged at G, and arranged to operate substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
LUCY EMMA ANDREWS.
