Description

(No Model.)
L. QUOSBAR-TH.
KNIFE.
No. 372,565. Patented Nov. 1, 1887.
WITNESSES. l/VVEA/TOI? w ATTORNEYS UNITE STATES PATENT Fries.
LUDWVIG QUOSBARTH, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,565, dated November 1, 1887.
Application filed A pril 28. 1887. Serial No. 236,470. (No model To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Lnnwre QUOSBARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a knife-blade with a novel finger-guard; and to such end it consists in the features of construe tion hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view when the finger-guard is in its forward position. Fig. 3 is a similar view when the finger guard is in its rear position.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letterAindicates aknif'eblade, and B is the knifehandle.
O is a finger-guard, which, as seen in Figs.
1 and 2, is adapted to rest over the back of the knife. The finger-guard is curved or cupshaped, so that when in the position shown in Fig. l a finger can be rested in the hollow of the finger-guard. The finger resting in said guard enables the operator to bring force to bear on the blade A, while at the same time said finger is protected against coming into contact with the object which is being cut, or with chips from said article or object.
The cup-shaped guard C is provided with a short shank hinged to the knife-handle B by a transverse pivot-pin, D, and the said shank projects beyond the pivot-pin to form a rounded tail-piece, D, which is acted on by the free end of a'fiat spring, E, arranged in a recess, E, in the handle and secured at one end by a screw, E or otherwise. The free end of the fiat spring, acting on the end of the tail D, serves to confine the guard in place when turned over the knife-blade or when turned back over the knife-handle.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A knife having a handle, 13, provided with a recess, E, in combination with a flat spring, E, arranged in said recess, and a cupshaped guard, 0, having a shank hinged to the handle by a transverse pivot-pin, D, and having the tail D, the end of which is acted on by the free end of the spring in the recess, said guard being adapted to swing over upon the knife blade and back over the knitehandle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
" LUDWIG QUOSBARTH.
