SAFETY nAzoR.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922;
Application filed June Z, 1918. Serial No. 238,702.
and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the inventlon is to provide a razor of the character stated which is simple and durable in structure, embracing a minimum number of parts and havlng the parts so assembled that they. may be readily disconnected from each other for cleansing, sharpening the blades or packing in compact space.
A. further object of the invention is to provide in a razor of the character stated means whereby the handle may be positioned at a desired angle with relation to the plane in which the blade of the razor lies, consequently the razor may be convenlently used over the face or any part of the body.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for holding the blade during the stropping or sharpening of the same.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an edge view of the razor.
Figure 2 is a side View of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blade of the razor.
Figure 1 is a plan view of one guard plate of the razor.
Figure 5 is a similar view of the other guard plate of the razor.
Figure 6 is a side view of a stud used in the razor.
Figure 7 is a side view of the handle of the razor with parts shown in SBCtIOII.
Figure 8 is a side view showing the parts arranged for holding the blade for stropping or sharpening.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the blade holder.
Figure 10 is a transverse sectional view of the device cut on the line 10--10 of Figure 8.
provided at, its center with a longitudinally (llS osed slot 2. a
guard plate 3 is adapted to be positioned at the outer side of the blade and is provided wlth arched portions 4 adapted to )ass through the slot 2 of the blade 1. he inner ends of the arched portions are separated or spaced by an opening 5. The razor further includes a guard plate 6 which is provided at its opposite edges with the usual teeth 7. The plate 6 is further provlded at its center with a longitudinally disposed slot 8 which is adapted to register with the slot 2 of the blade 1 and is adapted to receive the arched portions 4 of the blade 3 when the parts are assembled. The plate 6 is further provided at a point between the ends of the slots 8 with a hump 9 which bridges the slot 8. The said hump 1s substantially convexo-concaved in configuration and is provided with a slot 10 having its median longitudinal dimension disposed at a right angle to the corresponding dimension of the slot 8.
The razor further includes a T-shaped stud 11 which is provided with a substantially cylindrical head 12. The head 12 is adapted to lie within the arched portion 4 of the plate 3 and the shank of the stud 11 passes through the opening 5 and the slots 8 and 10. A handle 13 is rovided at one end with a threaded socket it which is adapted to be screwed into engagement with the shank or stem of the head 11. Therefore when the handle 13 is applied to the stud the plates 3 and 6 and the blade 1 will be clamped in position between the end of the handle and the head 12 of the stud. It is apparent that by loosening the handle 13 upon the stud the handle may be swung at any desired angle with relation to the plane in which the blade 1 lies and when at a desired adjustment may be secured by screwing the handle upon the stud and clamping the parts as hereinbefore indicated.
The handle 13 is provided at that end opposite the end which is provided with the socket 14 witha sleeve 15 having a slot 16 leading into the .same from one end thereof. A retaining member 17 is adapted to be used in conjunction with the handle when the same is used for stropping or sharpening the razor blade. One end of the retaining member is adapted to be slipped endwise upon the sleeve 15 and the said end of the said member is provided with lugs 18 which enter the slot 16 whereby the member 17 is restrained against turning movement with relation to the handle when the parts are connected. The member 17 is hollow and is provided at its outer end with a longitudinally disposed slot 19.
A blade holder 20 is adapted to be used in conjunction with the member 17 and the said blade holder is preferably formed from a sheet of metal which posseses. more or less resiliency.
The blade holder 20 is provided with a cylindrical portion 21 adapted to fit in the end portion of the member 17 and the said blade holder 20 is further provided with flat portions 22 located at the edges of the c lindrical portion 21 and adapted to pass tirou h the slot 19 of the retaining member 17. ne of the flat portions 22 is provided with a slot 23 and the other portion 22 is provided with a hump 24.
The razor blade 1 is adapted to be inserted between the portions 22 and when the slot 2 of the razor blade is in register with the slot 23 of one of the portions 22 the hump 24 of the other portion 22 may pass through the slot 2 of the blade 1 as best illustrated in Fi ure 10 of the drawing whereby the bla e is held in position between the flat portions 22 of the holder 20. The holder is theninserted in position in the end of the retaining member 17 as best shown in Figure.l0 of the drawing. Therefore the handle 13 and the parts connected therewith may be easily and conveniently used as means for holding the razor blade 1 while the same is being stropped or sharpened.
Having described the invention what is claimed is v A razor comprising a blade havin an oblong transverse opening, blade ho ding members and an integral spring connection between the blade holding members; sa d members by the inherent resiliency of said connection being held together in opposed relation with the razor blade between ture.
