Description

May 13, 1941. A. J, LURIE 98 CUTTI NG' DEVICE Filed Aug. 23, 1940 Patented May 13, 1941 UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE CUTTING DEVICE August J Lurie, Chicago, 111. Application August .23, 1940, Serial No. 353,879
'7 Claims.
The present invention relates in general to a knife or cutting device and more particularly to such devices as employ safety razor blades or the like for a cutting or scraping operation.
In the prior combination cutting and scraping devices employing a razor blade or the like, difficulty is encountered in quickly moving the blade from one adjusted position to another. Furthermore, the devices have been such, in many instances, that the blade Will not stay in an adjusted cutting or scraping position when under heavy operating pressure. In addition, there is the ever-present danger in some of the prior devices of cutting the operator during use, or during adjustment.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and efilcient cutting device or scraper employing a razor blade in which the cutting edge is protected when not in use.
Another object is to provide a device of this character in which the blade has two positionsa retracted, position and a working position.
Another object is to provide positive means spaced'from the cutting edge of the blade for moving the cutting blade from one position to the other thereby eliminating any possibility of cutting ones self in the operation.
A further object is to provide a device of this character for positively locking the blade in either position.
Still another object is to provide a sturdy, simple, and inexpensive cutting and scraping device. i
There are other objects of my invention which, together with the foregoing, will appear in the detailed description that is to follow, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing illustrating one embodiment thereof.
In practicing my invention I employ a metal handle which may be cast or stamped to the desired shape, and the end of the handle is so shaped as to furnish a guide or channel in which a blade slides from retracted to operating position.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my improved cutting device or scraper showing the blade in extended position;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the same device;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged section taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the'direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged end elevation of the device showing the manner in which the blade is guided.
Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawing, the
blade guide 6.
reference character 5 .designates the handle which is cast or stamped from any suitable metal in the shape shown. A knife or blade guide 6 rectanguarly shaped is formed integrally with the handle 5 and provided with upwardly extending flange portions along opposite sides thereof. The blade guide 6 is of suitable width to receive a blade 8 which may be the usual safety razor blade, although other blades of a similar size and shape are equally suitable. The blade guide 6 is provided with a rectangular slot 9 which length determines the travel of the blade 8 from retracted to operative position.
A pair of depression-s l9 and II are formed on either side of the blade guide 6 suitably spaced to determine the travel of the blade 8 from retracted to operative position, and cooperate in maintaining a blade in either of the two adjusted positions. A substantially rectangularly shaped blade holder I2 is formed from suitable metal and is provided with upstanding flanges l3 cooperating with the flanges l of the The holder I2 is provided with a pair of depressed lugs l4 adapted to penetrate the depressions l0 and H and so look the blade in one of two positions.
The blade holder I2 is provided with a rectangularly shaped opening [5 (Fig. 1) adapted to receive the rectangularly shaped shank of a screw l6 which fastens ,the blade 8 in position in the holder l2 and penetrates the adjusting slot 9 in the blade guide 6. The screw I6 is provided with a rounded head I! and a knurled adjusting nut [8 which may be easily and conveniently grasped by an operator adjusting the position of the blade.
The device is assembled by placing the. screw H5 in the slot 9, then putting the blade 8 in position in the blade guide, followed by the blade holder I2 positioned upon one face of the blade, and the adjusting nut I8 on the screw it. Loosening the adjusting nut permits the blade to be moved from retracted to operative position, where tightening of the nut l8 causes the lugs I4 to be tightly clasped into either of the depressions I0 and H, thus locking the blade in one of two positions. Of course, the blade 8 may be adjusted to a position between these two, if necessary, though in such an instance it is only held frictionally and not positively locked.
It will be seen that my device permits easy movement of the blade from retracted to operative position with a positive guide from one position to the other, with no danger of the operator being cut in such manipulation. This device may be used in the customary manner for a scraper, knife, box opener, etc., and a sturdy tool is assured under all conditions.
It will be seen that my improved device is simple, inexpensive to construct, and highly efflcient in operation.
My invention may be variously modified without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as indicated in the appended claims.
I claim:
