4 Claims. (Cl. 30-12) This invention relates to safety razors and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which includes a novel construction of blade and holder therefor whereby the blade is removable from the holder and so connected to the handle of the holder that it will readily adjust itself to the guard when the latter carried by the handle is brought into engagement with the blade so as to assure proper l0 functioning of the device when in use.
" With these and other objects in View this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and l5, claimed.
For a complete understanding of our invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a safety razor constructed in accordance with our invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating 2i the connection between the handle and blade.
' Figure 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating the guard adjusted to the blade.
Figure 5 is a plan view illustrating a modified form of leg.
Figure 6 is a sectional view illustrating a modified form of holder adaptable to the type of blade shown in Figure 5.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates a blade having a cutting edge 2 and a thickened backing 3 provided with a cutout portion intermediate the ends of the blade for the purpose of receiving a block 4. Opposite walls of the cutout portion of the blade are provided with projections 5 adapted to snap into recesses 6 formed in opposite walls of the block for the purpose of detachably connecting the blade to the block. The block 4 is of hollow formation so that the recessed walls thereof are capable of flexation to permit the lugs 5 to snap in and out of said recesses. An opening is formed in one end vof the block to receive one end of a shank '7 and said end is pivotally connected to opposite walls of the block by a pin 8. The pivot between the shank and the pivot between the blade and the block permit said blade to have a limited universal movement with respect to the shank. The shank forms an integral part of a handle 9 and the shank is of rectangular shape in cross section and has formed upon the opposite walls thereof ribs 10 provided with offset ends 11. A sleeve 12 is slidable on the shank and carries a guard 13. The guard is in the form of a plate 14 having one edge laterally offset to form a guard flange 15 adapted for association with the cutting edge of the blade 1. The plate 14 is offset where it forms onto the sleeve 12 to form a pocket 16 of a size to receive a portion of the block 4 for retaining the block against pivotal movement on the shank. Opposite walls of the sleeve 12 are provided with grooves 17 shaped correspondingly to the ribs l0 so that on adjustment of the guard to the blade the grooves receive the ribs 10 and retain the block in the pocket and the guard adjusted properly to one of the side faces of the blade. The plate 13 of the guard has formed thereon retaining flanges 18 adapted to overlie the noncutting edge or thickened portion of the blade when the guard is adjusted to the blade for the purpose of preventing the blade from pivoting with respect to the block 4. Projections 19 are formed on the plate 14 of the guard to contact with one face of the blade for properly positioning the cutting edge with respect to the guard flange 15.
As shown in Figure 5, the blade 20 is of a thin or wafer type having a cutting edge 20' and the opposite edge thereof cut away toreceive a casing-like element 21. The element 21 Aconsists of a wall 22 and flanges 23 offset to form channels adapted to receive opposite walls of the cutout portion of the blade 20. The flanges 23 are provided with projections 24 adapted to snap into sockets formed on a block 25. The block 25 is pivoted to the shank of the handle. The guard 26 is similarly constructed to the guard 13 except that the pocket is omittedi A safety razor constructed in accordance with the foregoing description and as shown in the drawing will permit the blade to be easily and quickly removed or applied and when applied to be readily adjusted to the guard or the'latter adjusted to the blade so as to assure proper functioning of the razor while in use.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, we claim:
1. A safety razor comprising a blade, an element pivotally and detachably connected to the non-cutting edge of the blade, a handle pivoted to saidelement, and a guard for the said blade and slidably mounted on the handle to engage 251 f j j;-
a handle pivoted to the block, a guard 'slidably mounted on the handle and having a pocketvto receive the block to prevent pivotal movement of the block with respect to the handle 'and to hold to the block by engaging said blade, and means for retaining the guard in said position.
4. A safety razor comprising a blade, a block pivotally and detachably connected to the blade, a handle pivoted to the block, a guard slidably mounted on the handle and having a pocket to receive the block to prevent pivotal movement of the block with` respect to the vhandle and to hold the blade-against pivotal movement with respect to the block by engaging said blade, ribs on the handle, and a sleeve on the guard to engage the ribs.
