HAIR 'mrmmma on CUTTING ATTACHMENT roa SAFETY Razors.

Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jun 13 1922.

Application filed June 12, 1920s Serial No. 388,449.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID W. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Orange, in the county of Essex andState of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Trimming or Cutting Attachments for Safety Razors;

a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in shaving and hair-cutting devices; and, the present invention relates more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed attachment for use as a hair-cut-.

ting device which is readily attachable to safety razors of the usual construction, without necessitating any change whatsoever in the structure of the safety-razor.

The present invention has for its principal object to provide. an attachment which is easily and quickly applied in its operative position to a safety razor, without disturbing the position of the shaving blade, so that. the latter when the'attachment is in position can be used for hair-trimming or cut ting purposes; the present invention having for its further object to so arrange. the attachment that it can be readily removed, in order to enable the operator'to use the safety rozor in the usual manner for shaving.

The invention has for its further object to provide a hair-trimming attachment for safety-razors which is readily adjustable with relation to the shaving edge of the shaving blade, so that the implement can be used for variously trimming the hair, ac-

cording to the length of hair desired.

It will also be. understood from the fol lowing description of thepresent invention, that the same blade may be used for the shaving or hair-trimming operation; or, if desired, one blade may be used for shaving,

this blade being removed when it is intended to trim or cut the hair, another bladje being substituted for the hair-trimming or cutting operation.

Other objects of the present invention not i then finally at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the followmg deta led description of the present invention:

With the various objects of the present in- 1 vention in view, the said invention consists, I primarily, in the novel hair-trimming or and I do hereby declare the following to be cutting attachment for safety-razors herethe present invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in theffollowing specification, and embodied in the clauses of the claims wh1ch are appended to and vwhich. form anessential part of the said specification. I

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a safet razor, of the Gillette type, and of the hairtrimming or cutting attachment a plied thereto, whereby the safety-razor is adhpted for use as a hair-trimmer or cutter.

Figure 2 is a view of the device, looking in the direction of the arrow X in said Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional representation of the device, taken on line 33 in said Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrow Y. I

Figure 4 is a side elevation of a safetyrazor, of the Gem type, and of a modified form of hair-trimming or cutting attachment a direction of the arrows -z-z.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.v

Referringnow to said Figures 1, 2and 3 of the drawings, the safety-razor therein shown is of the Gillette type of the usual and well-known construction, and the same comprises the usual concavo-convexly formed rocker-body or element 1 provided with-the usual screw 2, which extends in the usual manner through the perforated guard 3, be-

tween which and the said body or element 1, the usual razor-blade 4 is placed, said blade 4 being correspondingly perforated for the insertion and passage of the said screw 2 therethrough in the usual and well-known manner, and for the screwing of the internally screw-threaded socket-end ot' the usual handle 5 upon the screw-threaded shank of the screw 2 for bringing the several members in their securely clamped or tightened relation. The reference-characters 6 and 7 indicate the usual guide-posts or studs of the said body or element 1 which extend into and through properly placed holes or perforations in the blade 4 and the guard 3 for the proper registration of the various elements in their assembled relation. Along its opposite edges the said uard 3 is provided with the usual marginal ngers 8, as shown. Referring now more particularly to Figures 1 and 3of the drawings, the reference-character 9 indicates the hair-trimming or cutting attachment for use with the Gillette safety-razor, the same being made in the form of a plate of spring-metal, which is slightly bent in a downward direction, as at 10, see Figure 1, said bent ortion being also provided with margina fingers 11, adapted to lie above the fingers 8 of the guard 3 as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. Along its oppos te marginal edgeportion the said plate 9, is formed with re-' cesses or cut-away portions, as 12, 13 and14, for registration respectively with the screw 2 and the respective centering guide-posts or studs 6 and 7, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of said Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings. To secure the said plate 9 in its operative position, so that the safetyrazor can be used as a hair-trimming or cutting implement, the handle ,5 is sufiiciently unscrewed upon the screw-shank 2 to enable the plate 9 to be slipped into position,'with its recesses or cut-away portions 12, 13 and 14 in registration respectively Twith said screw 2 and with the respective posts or studs 6 and 7, as above stated, and with the portions of the plate bounding the recess or cut-away port on 12 located directly beneath the end-portion of the bandle 5.

In this position, the plate 9 can be adjusted, so as to bring its marginal fingers 11 closely to or farther away from the cutting edge of theblade 4. After this adjustment has been made, the handle is again screwed.

down tight, so as to secure the various elements in their properly adjusted and assembled relation.

The device is then moved through the hair in precisely the same manner as using the safety-razorupon the face, as in shaving,.

the razor-blade operating to cut the hair, as

will be clearly understood. I

In Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings is shown a slightly modified form of hairtrimming or cutter-attachment for a safetyrazor of the Gem type.

In this construction, between the fastening portion 16 of the usual element 15 and the with the angularly disposed member 21, provided along its marginal edge with suitably disposed fingers, as 22, adapted to be located in front of the cutter-edge of the razorblade 23, substantially as shownin Figure 5 of the drawings. To secure the said guard 20 in its operative position, so that the safety-razor can be used as a hair-trimming-or cutting implement, the handle 17 is sufficiently unscrewed upon the screw-threaded shank of the screw 19 to enable the guard 20 to he slipped into position, with its recessed or cut-away portion 24, see Figure 5, to register with the shank of said screw 19, so as to be located directly beneath the endportion of the handle 17. 1 In this position, the guard 20 can be adjusted, so as to bring its marginal fingers 22 closely to or farther away from the cuttin edge of the razor-blade, as may be desire After this adjustment has been made, the handle is again screwed down tight, so as to secure the various elements in their properly adjusted and assembled relation. The device can then be moved through the hair in precisely the same manner of using the safety razor, as in shaving, except that the razor-blade now operates to cut the hair, as will be clearly understood. v

I am fully aware, of course, that changes may be made in the various arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing s ecification, and as definedin theclauses' o the claims which are appended to the said specification.

Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do I confine my self to the exactdetails of the construction of the saidparts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
