Description

v H. 0. E. JAOOBY. APPLIANCE IOR SHARPENING SGISSORS, SHEARS, AND THE LIKE. APPLICATION FILED MAY17,1911. RENEWED DEG.13,1912.
1,051,333,, Patented Jan. 21, 1913.
gen mmm HENRY CHARLES EDWARD JACOBY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
APPLIANCE FOR SHARPENING SCISSORS, SHEARS, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 17, 1911, Serial No. 627,664.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY CHARLES En- WARD JAcoeY, residing at 26 Norfolk avenue, Stamford Hill, London, N., England, Great Britain, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Appliances for Sharpening Scissors, Shears, and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in an improved appliance for sharpening scissors, shears and the like.
It consists of a plate of metal or other suitable substance having two slots one above the other placed so that the right hand edge of the one is preferably in line with the left hand edge of the other, said slots being separated by a suitably shaped cutter, placed at an angle across the slots. These as well as other improvements will be readily understood by means of the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows an elevation of the appliance. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is likewise a side elevation, but with the guard attached. Fig. 4 shows my appliance as forming the lid portion of a box. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of cutter. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevation of the device showing the application of this modified form of cutter to the guide plate.
In the drawings 1 shows a plate formed of metal or other suitable substance having a handle -2 and slots 3 and 4- in stepped relation to each other one above the other as shown, separated by a cutter -5 placed at an angle across said slots, and fitted in openings 5 of the lugs -6 formed on the plate -1, or said cutter may be formed as shown at 5 in Figs. 5 and 6, and fastened by screws 10, or the like. This cutter may consist of a portion of a round file, or steel, having a suitable cutting edge, or in some cases may assume varying sections, or again carborunduIn or other suitable grinding material may be used for the cutter.
Fig. 3 shows a guard -7- made of a strip of metal or other suitable substance, the object of same being to prevent the blades of the scissors, shears or the like Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21,1913.
Renewed December 13, 1912. Serial No. 736,614.
from being passed through the slots on the wrong side, or underside of the plate.
Fig. 4'. shows my appliance as forming the lid portion of a box -8, or this may take the form of a stand.
With particular reference to Figs. 5 and 6, the cutter 5 is made from steel or other hard metal having beveled sharpening edges, and provided with slots 9- for adjustment on the plate -lwhen worn in one part.
Although I have shown the cutter in the rounded form as being rigidly fixed in the lugs 6-, said cutter may if desired be mounted in any suitable manner upon the plate, and may be made adjustable as to formation of angle to suit special kinds of scissors or shears, as well as longitudinally, so as to present a fresh cutting surface to the blades of said scissors or shears, when one portion is worn smooth.
The operation of my invention is as follows :To sharpen the blades of scissors, shears or other beveled cutting appliances, one blade is passed through slot 3- and the other blade through slot -4- pressure being exerted 011 the edges of the cutter --5- by pressing said blades together as in the ordinary cutting action, at the same time working said scissors backward or forward along the length of its blades.
By my invention the sharpening of scissors, shears or like appliances is rendered much easier than heretofore, since no special skill in the manipulation of the device is needed.
I claim:
1. An appliance for sharpening scissors, shears or the like, comprising in combination, a plate provided with two oblong apertures in stepped relation to each other with their opposite longitudinal margins in alinement with each other, and a cutter disposed diagonally crosswise said aperture adjacent their stepped ends to present a sharpening surface at an acute angle to each of the said alined margins of said apertures.
2. An appliance for sharpening scissors, shears or the like, comprising in combination, a plate provided with two oblong apertures disposed in stepped relation with each other with. their opposite longitudinal margins in alinement with each other, a
cutter disposed diagonally crosswise the.
'said apertures adjacent their stepped ends to present a sharpening surface at an acute angle to each of the said alined margins of said apertures, and means whereby said cutter may be adjusted in a transverse direction with respect to the said apertures for changing the sharpening surface with respect thereto.
3. An appliance for sharpening scissors, shears or the like, comprising in combination, a plate provided with two oblong guide apertures in stepped relation 'to each otherwith their opposite longitudinal margins in alinement with each other, a cutter disposed at one side of the plate, diagonally crosswise the apertures therein and adjacent their stepped ends to present a sharpening surface at an acute angle to each of the said alined margins of said apertures, and a guard member secured to said plate,
spaced apart from said cutter and in alinement with the said guide apertures, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. An appliance for sharpening scissors, shears or the like, comprising in combination, a plate provided with guide means for the blades thereof, supporting meanscarried by said plate provided with openings,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, I). C.
