\ COMBINATION KNIFE AND SCISSQRS SHARPENER.
Application filed April 7, 1917. Serial No. 160,454..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED O. LAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wash- Specification of Letters Patent.
ington, in the District of Columbia,- haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Knife and Scissors Sharpeners, of which the following is a specificatlon.
The present illYGIlilOH embodies certain improvements upon the knife sharpener patented December 21, 1915, -No. 1,165,070,
of which I am the assignee. a
Said patent does not provlde means for accommodating scissors in a: sharpening" operation, the knife-or sharpening plate of said patent is limited in sliding movement by the screws which fasten the device to a' and said device has knife and scissors sharpener, and the still.
further advantage of expeditiously placing and removing and replacing the file plate,
and of limiting the adjustment of the plate in the holder.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a scissors blade and a knife blade in dotted lines as being-sharpened.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the holder.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the file plate engaging the shoulder stop.
Fig. l is an enlarged cross section of the holder taken through the spring stop.
Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the spring stop.
The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The sharpening element consists of a file plate 1, having convex or rounded side edges fitting longitudinal grooves of the holder, hereinafter particularly described. The sharpening faces of the plate may have varied serrations affording fine and coarse yatented Mar. 5, 1918.
sharpening surfaces, and said plate is'of such length as to he slid le -agthwise in the holder for utilizing out the "length oftheplate, so asto aflord uniform wear of the file surfaces in sharp ening'operations.
The file -plate holder is stamped or otherwise formed in one piece of suitable metal from which the base 3"of with aihandle the holder extends so as to leave the handle in raised position 'withres'pect tothe base',"
:and so as toxform a shoulder iat'the juncture ofthe handle and the said base. The sides of the holder comprise three-vertical said surfaces throu'gh- 7 flanges struck up from tlie'si de edges of the base 3 so as to form a groove 5 at the intersection of the'flanges' and the saidedges.
The side edges of the file platefit the grooves for slidably=retaining the platoon the" base 3. The shoulder t forms a stop for-- the inward' movement of the plate '1; and i the plate is limited in outward movement by a removable plate spring fi, having angle legs 7 forming a notch 'or shoulder 8 which engages the ends of a slot 9 in the outer end of the :base 3, when the legs'are inserted" through the 5 slot. The'spring 1S sprung" into the slot by placing one of' its legs 1 against one end 'ofthe slot from the bottom of the base3, so that the shoulder of this leg will engage one end'of the slot,"the'n by pressing or pushing against the" opposite corner of the spring, thereby contracting the spring, the other leg enters theslot and the spring is released so as to expand and have the shoulder of thisleg engage the other end of the slot. The spring is only operated for placing, reversing and removing the file plate.
The three flanges on each side of the holder being the same, only one set of said flanges will be described in detail. The central flange 10, and the end or adjacent flanges 11 are separated by slots forming inclined guide-ways 12, between the flanges 10 and 11 for a knife blade as A. The slots or guide-ways terminate at the base 3, in cut outs 13, so as to prevent the cutting edge of a blade striking any part of the holder during the reciprocation of a blade across the file plate through the slots or guide-ways in a sharpening operation. Each end of the flanges 11 is under-cut or beveled as at 14, to conform with and against which the inner flat side of a scissors blade as B, is reciprocated with the cutting edge against the file. The file blade is slid lengthwise the holder and against either the handle shoulder or the spring so as to afford sufiicient file surface for sharpening scissors at both ends of the holder.
It will be seen that this device is not to be fixed or attached in position for sharpening operations, that the device may be held in one hand while the other hand operates either a knife or scissors blade across the file plate, that the file plate is held in the holder grooves by the side flanges overlapping the plate, and that said plate may be slid lengthwise the holder as desired or as occasion may demand, without operating any devices, and without attaching, removing or allowing the file plate to become displaced.
1 do not wish to be understood as confining the invention to any particular size or material, nor do I wish to limit the application of the invention merely to knives and scissors, as similar blades of certain other implements and cutlery may be applied thereto for sharpening. Therefore I do not wish to limit the application of the invention in this respect, nor do I wish to confine the invention to any particular size or material in the manufacture thereof, but reserve the right to make such changes and variations therein as may be derived therefrom, within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a knife and scissors blade sharpener, a file plate, a holder slidably retaining the plateand having a plurality of side flanges formlng guide-ways for crosswise movement of the blades in a sharpening operation, a removable spring in one end of the holder, and a handle member at the other end of the holder, the said spring and the said member limiting lengthwise movement of the file plate.
2. In a sharpener of the character described, a holder having an integral handle, blade guide flanges oi the holder terminating in undercut scissors guides and slidably retaining a file plate on the base of the holder, and a spring removably retained by the base and forming a stop for the plate.
3. In a sharpener or" the character described, a holder having blade guide flanges slidably retaining a file plate on the base of the holder, a spring 'emovably retained in a base slot and forming a stop for the plate at one end of the holder, and an integral handle extension of the base and oil-set from one end of said flanges and forming a stop for the plate at the other end of the holder.
4-. In a file holder for sharpening blades of knives and scissors, duplicate blade guide flanges on each side of a base plate of the holder and slidably retaining the file on the plate, the end of certain of said tlanges be ing undercut tor scissors sharpening and the plate ends projecting from said undercut ends, a spring stop device on one of the said projecting ends, and an integral handle forming a stop shoulder on the other projecting end.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
