Application filed `May 3, 1917.l Serial No.`166,2031
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MILES HAsTINes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Lawn-Mower Sharpener, ot which the following is a speciiic'ation.
The `present invention relates to a sharpener, particularly adapted for sharpening the blades ot' lawn-mowers, and other tools or implements, and has for an object to provide a device which may beheld in the hand and applied to the blade of `the lawn-mower, and which securely holds a tile, or other suitable abrasive tool, for grinding the blade.4
The present invention provides a sharpener to be held in the hand, which has a onepiece body portion, is provided with a flat,
straight guide to accommodate knives. of spiral, straight, or other form, and which -1s provided with means for protectin the edge ot the knife as the same is being s arpened. The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, with the further understanding that while the drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is not conned to strict conformity with the showing of the drawing, but may be changed and modified, so long as such changes and modifications come within the scope of the appended claims.
1n the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lawnmower sharpener, constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section, taken through the same, the dotted lines showing a lawn-mower blade as applied to the sharp-- ener.
3 is an edge view of the Sharpener, showing the abrasive tool in place.
Fig. l is a detail perspective view of the :file or abrasive tool. Y
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary, enlarged sectional view, showing the rounded retaining shoulder and the position of the abrasive tool, which is held against the shoulder, the view bringing out more clearly the recess for the protection of the cutting edge of the blade.
Referring tothe drawing, 10 designates a handle of suitable size and conguration to tit in the hand, and is provided upon one side with a relatively -iiat shank 11. The shank 11 has, in its outer edge, a longitudinal recess or slot 12, providing at one side of the shank a `short lip 13, and at the other side of the shank a long lip lll. The long lip has an ini eline-d inner wall 15 terminating at its outer Q clined wall 15, by clamping screws 18, or the l like. VThe screws 18 pass through the short lip 13 and bind against the adjacent side of the tool 17. n
As shown to `adi'rantage in Fig; 5,the shoulder 16 is provided with a rounded edge, which flares outwardly away from the adjacent face of the tool 17 to provide, between the shoulder and the tool, a groove or recess 19 to accommodatethe sharp edge oit' the blade 20, when the Sharpener is placed against the latter.
Beyond the shoulder 167 the long lip 14 has a fiat' straight face 2l constituting a guide extending the full length of the shank 11, and adapted tosupport the blade 20 in position against the file 17. The short lip 13 terminates substantially in the plane of the outer face of the tool 17, so that when a curvedor spiral blade is employed, the blade will not bind between the lips 13 and 14e, but may be held in place by contact against the single guide 21.
1n the case of a curved or spiral blade, the blade makes contact with the guide 21 at the ends oi the latter only, thus reducing friction to a minimum, and holding the blade in proper position against the file 17. When the blade is in position, the abrupt or cutting edge 22 extends into the groove or recess 19, and is not dulled by wiping contact against any part of the holder, or body, of the device.
Y The inner wall 15 is inclined at an angle of substantially ten degrees to the guiding face 21, and when the tool 17 is clamped in position, the same being rectangular in cross section, its outer tace is presented at an angle of substantially ten degrees from the perpendicular with respect to the guidin :tace
21 which insures the proper bevel ein given to the blade. Thus, when the cutting blade 20 is tted against the guide 2l, its beveled edge rests Hat against the le 17.
That is claimed is 1. A. sharpener comprisin a holder hav-- `-Gepiea ofpths iaatent may be obtainedio lips at the opposite sides of the slot, said long lip having an inclii'i'edinner"Wallterininatiiig substantially opposite to the end of the short lip in a retaining shoulder,y and having a straight guiding face beyond said i 1- shoulder having a rounded edge Haring away. from theadjaeent face of the tool and providing therebetween a groove adapted to reeeivethe cutting edge'otl ablade when the i tool is applied thereto.
2. A Sharpenerv comprising la vholder liavv V- inga slot in ,one edge and longfandvshort 20 lips atopposite., sides of the slot, said long lip havingan inclined innerfwalltei'ininatf ing-:substantially yopposite, tothe end of the ing a slot in Yone edge, andv long and short' .ci short lipin a retaining shoulder and having a straight guiding face beyond said shoulvdeiga Yreeta'n'gularv tool fitting' in said slot upon said shoulder, and a screw carried by `the short lip and directly engaging that face of the tool opposite the face which isiir engagement With the inclined Wall `of the long li) to bind said tool against i Said Wall and s onlder for holding the tool atan angle to said guiding face,'tlie tool being of a size in cross section less than the space between the inner walls of the long and short lips'for tlieready introduction of i the tool Vin the slot.
In testimony, that I elaini the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ailixed my signature in the presence of-tWo witnesses.
MILES HASTINGS.
