Description

@Qi H5, N MERCER Zlg@ RAZOR BLADE STROPPER Filed Jan, 25, 1935 Patented Oct. 15, 1935 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in razor bade stropping devices, and one of its objects is to provide a stropper which can be made in two pieces, one of which includes a handle and blade centering means or clamping member, and the other of which consists of a clamping member adapted to straddle the other clamping member and produce edge pressure on the razor blade to be stropped.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a stropper for safety razor blades of the two edged type, with curved side surfaces which approximately match each other, and which afford a good stropping angle for the cutting edge of the safety razor blade, this being provided on the detachable clamping member which straddles the blade centering member formed on the handle.
A further object is to provide a blade centering pin formed out of the stock of the handle, by a stamping operation, under which the detachable clamping member will slidably interlock.
A further object of the invention is to provide a razor blade stropper with a detachable clamping member which straddles the blade centering member of the handle, and slidably interlocks with the centering pins thereof.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain new and useful constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification, and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the stropper with a blade carried thereby.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view taken on line A of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the handle member, 40 with the detachable clamping member removed.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken on line B of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the detachable clamping member. o
Fig. 6 is a vdetail transverse sectional view, taken on line C of Fig. 3, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 7 is a central longitudinal sectional view, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional View of a modified form.
Fig. 9 is an inside plan view thereof, showing the clamping member on an enlarged scale, before being completed.
Fig. 10 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating practical construction of my invention 5 designates the handle member, which is provided with an integral blade carrying plate 6, which forms the base blade clamping member or element, and which is provided with a plurality of struck-out T-shaped lugs or blade centering pins l, 8 and 9. Each of these lugs includes the blade retaining head I0 which extends transversely of the bar, and the legs II and I2, all of which are stamped from the stock of the blade. The head I5 of each projection is offset relative to the legs I I and I2. The heads of the three retaining pins or projections are disposed in approximately the same common plane, and the legs are longitudinally aligned with each other.
At the inner end of the blade carrying plate 6 at its junction with. the handle 5 a forwardly extending laterally off set lug I5a is provided which is designed to overlie the adjacent end of the clamp leg I5 to restrain a retained blade against vibration.
The two edge blade I3 is placed over the centering pins or projections, and then the detachable substantially U--shaped clamping member 2 I4 is mounted in place. For this purpose the member I4 is provided with a leg I5, Which is formed with 'a longitudinal slot I6, to receive the heads I0 of the projections, and with a leg Il, which is adapted to have spring bearing contact with the bottom or outer face of the base clamping member E. The two legs I5 and I'I are united by the bend I8. When the bottom member or leg Il is wholly disengaged from the member 6, it will spring slightly toward the member 3 I5. The member 6 is formed with an L-shaped lug 6a, designed to engage the inner end of the split leg I5, so as to retain the blade against vibration. The inner end of the leg il is slightly bevelled at Il', to permit of easy mounting. The side edges Isa and I6b of the slot I6 are slightly relieved so that the heads I 0 of the retaining projections will be ilush with the outer surface of the leg I5.
The legs I5 and I 'l of the detachable clamping member I 4 are transversely curved outwardly in convex form, so that both outer faces of the stropper will be alike, and the riding edge on each side of the device, will provide a proper stropping angle for the stropping of the blade.
The handle may be provided with facing strips 5a, secured thereto by means of eyelets 5', and 5".
As shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10 the detachable clamping member may be formed with inturned side flanges I9 and 20, formed on the plate member 2l, which are spaced apart to providethe longitudinal slot 22, which slidably receives the heads l) of theY connecting pins or projections. The other leg 23 is then bent into U-shaped relation to the member or leg 2 i, as shown in Fig. 10, so that the device Will straddle the base clamping member 6, which is left unchanged. This form of construction provides a detachable clamping member in which the coupling slot is concealed, but the function and operation of the coupling remains substantially the same, except that spring tension may be developed in the flanges i9 and 2S.
The outside or external faces of the legs of the detachable clamping member have approximately equal convex curves, sothat the stropping angle on each side of the device will be approximately the same, and uniform sharpening .of the razor blade edge will take place.
After a safety razor blade has been clamped between the clamping members, the device is placed on a razor strop and rocked by hand from one position to the other, so that one edge of the blade will be stropped When the stropper is shifted in one direction, and the opposite edge on the same side of the'blade, will be stropped When the stropper is shifted in the opposite direction.
Having described my invention I claim:-
A razor blade holder comprising a handle having a longitudinally extending blade-carrying plate equipped with a plurality of blade centering lugs, said lugs being stamped from said plate and each having legs with an offset head connecting them and extending transversely of the plate, a U-shaped blade-clamping member to endwise straddle said blade-carrying plate and having one leg provided with a longitudinal slot to receive the legs of said lugs and iit under the heads thereof, the other leg of said clamp resiliently engaging the opposed face of said plate to hold 20 the clamp in operative position.
