Poughkeepsie, N. Y.
Application February 24, 1938, Serial N0. 192,274
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a safety razor blade holding device.
The object of this invention is to provide a holder for a standard form of double edged razor ".5l blade, the holder being so constructed that the blade may quickly and readily be attached thereto and removedvtherefrom, the blade being so held on the holder whereby the device may be used for shaving by one who shaves with a straight razor in order to thus dispense with the troublesome honing required in the use of a straight razor necessitating skill and the eX- penditure of time.
Other objects of the invention relate to the safety blade holder device being adaptable for use for stropping razor blades, as a utility knife in the home, ofce or shop, and for a multitude of other purposes.
Important objects of the invention are thus to provide a holder of the character described, which will accurately and rigidly dispose of the blade at the proper angle on the holder for shaving or stropping purposes, and which blade is releasably held in position by a spring backing plate, the Whole device embodying but two parts in addition to the razor blade, which may be effectively operated even by unskilled persons, and which may be conveniently and quickly operated to secure a blade or to release the latter therefrom.
In the accompanying drawing in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear:-
Figure 1 is a side View of the safety razor blade holder constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front edge elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is a separated View showing the safety razor blade mounting portion of the holder and the spring backing plate in position prior to assembly of the same on said holder.
Referring in detail to the drawing, I denotes the safety razor blade holder comprising a handle II, and a Xed clamping jaw I2 formed integral therewith at one end thereof, the entire holder Ill being preferably formed of metal of any desired nish and character. The fixed clamping jaw I2 is made slightly wider than the width of the handle II as shown and is provided with a depressed flat jaw surface I3 having at each end thereof a shoulder I4. The distance between the shoulders I4 is such as to be equal to the length of a standard form of double edge razor -blade I5 shown, see Figure 3, seated on the jaw surface I3, with the transverse edges thereof engaging the shoulders I4.
Formed integral with the jaw I2 or otherwise fixed thereto are a pair of longitudinallyV spaced i centering pins i6 arranged to one side of the center longitudinal plane of the jaw I2 and projecting above the jaw surface I3. The size oi the pins I6 are such as to snugly t within the conventional centering openings in the razor blade I5 whereby to properly position the same on the jaw I2. It will be noted that the position of the pins I6 on the jaw I2 is such that with the razor blade I5 centered thereby, only one edge portion |50; of the razor blade I5 will project beyond, what is the forward edge I 2a of the jaw I2, as clearly shown in Figure 3, the other edge I5b of the razor blade I5 lying flush with the back edge I2b of the jaw I2 so as to be completely covered thereby,
The opposed sides of the pins I6 are each notched or grooved as at II forv a purpose to be hereinafter described.
In order to lock the razor blade I5 to the holder I0 there is provided a removable clamping jaw I8 formed to provide a spring backing plate. The removable clamping jaw I8 is formed of spring steel, of a length and width slightly less than the length and'width of the razor blade I5. At one long edge of the removable clamping vjaw I8 there is formed a pair of longitudinally spaced re-entrant cut-away portions I9 to denne a central tongue 20 having parallel transverse edges 2|, the portions adjacent to each edge 2I being curved upwardly as at 22 to provide a spring bow. The length of the tongue 2U or spring bow from the transverse edge 2l to transverse edge 2l is equal to the distance between the opposed bases of the grooves Il in the pins I6.
The width of the cut-away portions I9 is such as to receive therein the solid portions of the pins I6, in the assembly of the removable clamping jaw I8 with the fixed jaw I2, the bottoms of said cut-away portions I9 being curvedas at 23 to provide limiting stops for inward movement of said jaw I8.
'I'hus with a razor blade `I5 positioned on the xed clamping jaw I2, see Fig. 3, the same is clamped thereto by the removable spring clamping jaw I8 which is assembled by inserting the tongue 20 with its upwardly curved ends 22 into the grooves I'I of the pins I8. The curvature of said curved ends 22 is such that the same will react against the heads Ilia of the pins I6, see Figure 2 to set up a spring pressure in the body of l the removable clamping jaw I to tightly press the same against the razor blade l5 thus maintaining the same resiliently clamped to the xed jaw I 2 in the manner readily apparent. The Width of the removable jaw I8 is such as to coact with the edge l2b of the fixed jaw I2` to completely enclose the edge |51) of the razor blade as shown in Figure 1. l
It Will thus be seen that an extremely simple and eicient holder for a safety razor blade has been provided. It is to be understood, however, that the showing thereof is merely illustrative of the embodiment of the invention, and that the actual needs of manufacture and practice may necessitate certain mechanical variations. It is therefore, not intended to limit the inventionv to the disclosure thereto herein illustrated, but rather to dene such limitations in the'clai'niA hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention, I lclaim as side 'of said xed clamping jaw extending the full Width thereof and defining at each end a transing said blade that only one edge thereof Will extend beyond the longitudinal edge of said clamping jaw nearest to said pins, and a removable clamping jaw rectangular in shape of the same Width as said clamping surface but of less length thereof comprising an intermediate tongue defined by a pair of longitudinally spaced transverse slots extending inwardly from one longitudinal edge thereof, each transverse end of said tongue being bowed upwardly to provide a resilient holding portion, said slots being adapted to slidably receive said pins and said resilient holding portions engaging the underside of the heads of said pins whereby to securely clampy
