G. MAzzoNn SAFETY RAZOR AND BLADE HOLDER Filed July 27. 1923 Patented h'lar. ll, i924.
GIUSEPPE MAZZONI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY RAZOR AND BLADE HOLDER.
Application led J'uly 27, 1923. Serial No. 654,115.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GIUSEPPE MAZZONI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors and Blade Holders, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to certain new and uselul improvements in safety razors, and the object of the invention is to provide a device ot this kind wherein the blade is positioned parallel with the handle to be employed similar to the blade ot a straight razor.
` Another object of the invention is to provideV a. razor of the above kind having removable blade tensioning and guard plates, upon the removal et which the handle is adapted tor holding the razor blade for sharpening purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a safety razor, a simple, durable and etlicient form et holder tor safety razor blades by means of which the latter may be readily stropped and effectively retained while being stropped.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In a drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is an elevational view ot a safety razor constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 looking at the opposite side of the device.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken on line H cf Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a substantially central longitudinal sectional view of the device as it appears when employed as a holder for stropping blades.
Figure 6 is a plan view of a modified form of guard plate which may be employed in lieu et the guard plate shown in VFigure 1 when it is desired to use the deviceior hair cutting purposes, and
Figure 6aL is a sectional View taken on line 6-6"* of Figure 6.'
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the invention embodies a handle membeil constructed from a strip of suitable springy sheet metal and return-bent intermediate its ends as atI 5 so that a pair of adjacent yieldably connected integral handle members 6 and 7 are provided. The adjacent end portions et' the members 6 and 7 are preferably transversely curved for strengthening purposes, as shown clearly in Figure 5, and the free end portions of the handle members are further provided with a plurality of openings 8 and 9 which coincide with each other, the handle member 7 being further provided with hollow studs l0 about the openings 8 thereof adapted to enter the openings 8 of the handle member 6 when the device is employed for stropping purposes, as shown in Figure 5, whereby the handle members are etlectively held against lateral pla-y relative to each other. rlhe studs 10 are positioned through the usual openings provided in a safety razor blade when the latter is disposed between the handle members, and the latter are effectively latched in clamping engagement with opposite sides of the blade by means of a spring catch 11 which is formed of a strip or' springy metal attached to the handle member 7 and extending inwardly through a slot 12 in the latter and adapted to pass through a similar slot 13 in the handle member 6 when said handle members are forced together so that the catch 11 will engage the outer surface of the handle member 6 adjacent the slot 13 for releasably retaining the handle members in clamping engagement with a blade la.
The catch 11 is of substantially L shape, as shown in Figure 5, and will effectively serve its purpose, although permitting ready release of the handle members tor removing the blade when the stropping operation is completed.
As shown in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, the device is provided with a flat guard plate 15 which is toothed along its longitudinal edges as at 16 and is provided with openings for reception of the dowel pins 17 and clamping screw 18 of a. curved tension plate 19. rI'he studs 10 permit the passage of the pins l? therethrough and the handle member 7 is disposed against the inne-r surface of the plate 19 while the handle member 6 is disposed against the outer surface oi' the guard plate 15, as clearly shown in Figure 3,
whereupon a suitable nut 2O is threaded up-VV on the screw i8 for effectively clamping the parts assembled for use as a double-edged safety razor.
In case the device is desired to be used for cutting oi hair, a guard pla-te 2l is simply substituted for the guard plate l5, and this guard plate 21 is similar in form to the guard plate l5, but of slightly larger dimensions, provided with longer teeth, and transversely curved as shown in Figure 6a.
`The, outer surfaces of the handle members 6 and 7 are preferably roughened as at 22 to prevent slipping. Y
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a safety razor and blade holder which is very simple and easy to operate and which can be manufactured at a very small cost, with a blade holder employed for stropping composed of only two parts that can be made by the use of stamps and dies and which are associated with each other in a simple and durable manner.
Minor changes` may be made without departing 'from the sp-irit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
In a safety razor an elongated handle formed of a single strip of springy sheet metal centrally return-bent to provide a pair of integrally connected normally separated handle members having a plurality of longitudinally alined opposed openings in the free end portions thereoione of Said handle members having hollow studs projecting inwardly therefrom about certain of said openings and entering the opposed openings of the other handle member when said handle members are brought together, said hollow studs being adapted to enter the openings of a conventional safety'razor blade, said handle members being further provided with alined transverse slots inwardly of the open! ings, a catch of substantially L shape attached to the outer surface. of one of the handle members Vand extending forwardly and then laterally through said slots and terminating in a hooked free end adapted to engage the otherhandle member adjacent its slot for retaining the handle members in clamping engagement with a bladeY disposed therebetween, a transversely curved tension plate disposed against the outer surface of one of the handle members and having a central clamping screw and end pins projecting through the openings of the handle members, a toothed guard plate disposed between the other handle member and the razor blade and provided with openings through which said clamping screw and'pins project, and a nut upon said clamping screw engaging the outer surface of the last-named handle member for clamping the parts together. Y Y
In testimony whereof I. aliix my signature.
GIUSEPPE MAZZONI.
