UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed February 25, 1920. Serial No. 361,112.
T0 all whom it may cencern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved safety razor and the principal object of the invention is to provide a handle or blade holder having an improved jaw construc- ,tion and improved means for moving the outer jaw into binding engagement with a blade positioned between the inner and outer aws.
Another object of the invention is to construct this holder that the blade may be securely held in place between the two jaws and to further provide actuating means for the outer jaw so constructed that it will be easy to operate and further so constructed that the proper pressure may be applied to the blades.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved type of blade so constructed that it may be easily inserted or removed without danger of cutting the fingers.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing the improved safety razor in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the safety razor.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view taken 011 the line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the improved blade.
This safety razor is provided with a holder having a head formed of resilient sheet metal stamped and bent to provide an inner jaw 10 and a shorter outer jaw 11 from which extends side arms 12. It should be noted that the lower free end portion of the jaw 10 is oiiset as shown at 13 for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
The handle 14 is provided with a threaded forward end portion 15 which is rigidly connected with the inner jaw 10 and the blade carrying head and having a nut or actuat ing element 16 adapted to engage the enlarged central portion 17 of the yoke 18. This yoke 18 is slidably mounted upon the threaded end portion of the handle and has its arm extended forwardly and rigidly connected with the rearwardly extending arms 12 of the outer jaw 11. It will thus be seen that when the nut or actuating element 16 is turned and thus caused to move rearwardly upon the handle the nut will engage the enlarged central portion of the yoke and thus move the yoke rearwardly and draw the outer jaw 11 toward the inner jaw 10. Therefore a blade placed between the inner and outer jaws will be tightly gripped and securely held in place.
The blade'19 is positioned between the two jaws of the gripping or holding head with its sharpened cutting edge 20 terminating short of the lower edge of the jaw 10 as shown in Fig. 1 and is provided with side extensions or wings 21 which extend beyond the sides of the inner jaw so that the blade maybe gripped and inserted or removed with out danger of cutting the fingers against the sharpened cutting edge 20. It should be noted that when in place the offset portion 13 of the inner jaw causes this jaw to ex tend in spaced relation to the blade and at an angle to the same as shown in Fig. 1 thereby permitting the razor to be used with .the lower edge of the jaw 10 engaging the face and providing a fulcrum point upon which the razor may be rocked to bring the cutting edge of the blade into proper engage ment with the face. This will further permit the razor to be put in place and re moved without danger of the cutting edge being dulled by striking or scraping against the lower portion of the inner jaw. A very efficient safety razor has thus been provided in which the blade may be easily inserted or removed without danger of cutting the fingers or dropping the blade and in which the blade will be very securely clamped when in use.
What is claimed is z- A safety razor, comprising a head consisting of a sheet metal blank folded upon itself to provide inner and outer blade gripping jaws, and having extensions forming arms projecting rearwardly from the extremities of the outer jaw across the ends of the inner jaw, a centrally apertured yoke having its ends connected to the said arm, a handle projecting from the inner aw and passing 7 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature lo sely through the central aperture of the in presence of two witnesses;- yoire, end nut threaded on the handle and I I V EDWARD R NORTON engaging the central portlon of the yoke, V
