This invention relates to a file which may be used advantageously for trimming or filing a person's finger nails.

An object of the present invention is the provision of a file of the indicated character which embodies improved abrasive means whereby the flle is guided by the nail being filed, and whereby the abrasive means functions effectually in moving in either direction as the file is being reciprocated.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a file of the indicated character having novel means for conveniently and effectually gripping and manipulating the file for the intended purposes.

A further object is the provision of a file whose abrasive means consists of teeth so formed and arranged as to easily file or trim the finger nails with the desired rounded effect.

With the foregoing, other objects of the invention will appear when the following specification is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a file embodying the features of the present invention.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view showing the abrasive means of the file more clearly.

The file is made from a steel plate which is cut and stamped before it is hardened to provide a body ID, a rudimentary abrasive means along one longitudinal edge of the body, and means H on the body opposite the abrasive means for gripping and manipulating the file.

The rudimentary abrasive means stamped in the body 10 consists of a series of diagonal concavities and corresponding intervening ridges providing teeth in the finished article. .The body having the aforesaid features is then hardened according to known methods and the area hav ing the rudimentary abrasive means also may be put through a tempering process.

The rudimentary abrasive means is finished by grinding the aforesaid ridges with an emery wheel having a cross-sectionally convex periphcry. This operation produces a longitudinal groove in the body formed by a series of equally spaced concave teeth 12 extending diagonally of the body as shown. Each of the teeth l2 thus formed has two sharp curved cutting edges l 3 extending diagonally of the body I. These teeth constitute the abrasive means of the file.

The means I I is more or less flexible due to the series of transverse cuts in the body [0 extending through the edge providing a series of lateral members. The means I l enables a person to conveniently and securely grip the file and to manipulate or reciprocate it in carrying out the filing operation on the finger nails.

By reason of the diagonal arrangement of the teeth l2, the cutting edges I3 thereof function effectually in moving in either direction as the file is being reciprocated. The teeth l2 being concave with corresponding cutting edges l3 provide a longitudinal groove which receives the edge of the finger nail to be filed or trimmed and guides the file with respect to said edge.

The means II applied to the body 10 obviously may be used as a comb. Also, the body 10 may be provided With a clip [4 to retain the article in a pocket of a garment, a string cutter l5, nail scraper I 6, bottle opener I! and envelop opener I8.

I claim:

1. A finger nail file comprising a body made of relatively thin fiat metal, said body having a groove extending along one longitudinal edge thereof, abrasive means on said body consisting of a series of parallel teeth in the groove extending diagonally thereof, and means on the body for grippin and manipulating said file, said groove guiding the finger nail so as to be filed by the abrasive means upon the manipulation of the file.

A finger nail file comprising a body made of relatively thin fiat metal, said body having a groove extending along one longitudinal edge thereof, abrasive means on said body consisting of a series of parallel concaved teeth in the groove extending diagonally thereof, each of said teeth having two cutting edges corresponding to the formation and arrangement of the teeth, and means on the body for gripping and manipulating the file, said groove guiding the finger nail so as to be filed b the abrasive means upon the reciprocation of the file.
