JOHN GEORGE HERMES, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
SClSSORS-SHARPENER.
QPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,964, dated May 7, 1895.
Application filed February 19,1395- Serial No. 539,006. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J onn GEORGE HERMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors-Sharp 1eners, of which the following is a specifica- The object of this invention is to provide a fiat and compact scissors sharpener which can be readily carried on the person or elsewhere, and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the followin g specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- 1 Figure 1 shows an edge elevation of the sharpener. Fig; 2 shows a face elevation of Fig. l with shear-blades sectioned along w :10, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section along y y, Fig. 2.
The fiat plate or handle 1 has a head 2 lying in the plane of the handle so that the entire device will be flat and not bulky so as to be readily carried as in the vest pocket or in a work basket or the like. The plate is provided with the edges 3 and 4 and the head with the edges 5 and 6. The edges 4 and 6 are placed in alignment with one another. The edges 3 and 5 are placed out of alignment and parallel to one another. At the angles or meeting portions of the edges 4, 5 and 3, 6 the plate and head have the recesses or undercuts 7.
The blades 8 of a scissors or shears as known have the inner or meeting sides 9 straight or plainand the outer sides 10 have the bevels 11 leading to the cutting edges of the blades. Both blades can be sharpened simultaneously by this sharpener, since when the instrument is passed in between the opened blades and said blades are then compressed or closed against the edges 3 and 5 and the device moved along the blades, the bevels 11 which compress or sit firmly against the edges .3 and 5 are cut or pared off to make'or restore the cutting edge. At the same time the sides!) rest or are guided so lightly against edges 4 formed or cast in one piece will form a cheap and practically indestructible article.
The edges 3 and 5 as seen in Fig. 3 are tapered or convergent in transverse section so that their contracted or convergent portions lie toward the joint or angle formed by the open shear blades.
The device being made of tool steel hardened will possess the requisite cutting or paring capacity.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture a scissors sharpener comprising a flat plate or handle provided with'a flat head lying i n the plane of the handle, said plate and head being provided with the edges 4 and 6 placed in alignment with oneanother, and with the edges 3 and 5 placed out of alignment and parallel with one another, said plate and head having recesses or undercuts at the meeting portions of the edges 4, 5 and 3, 6 substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture a scissors sharpener comprising a flat plate or handle provided with a fiat head lying in the plane of the handle, said plate and head being provided with the edges 4 and 6 placed in alignment with one another, and with the edges 3 and 5 placed out of alignment and parallel with one another, said plate and head having recesses or undercuts at the meeting portions of the edges and said plate and head being formed integral with one another substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture a scissors sharpener comprising a flat plate or handle provided with a flat head lying in the plane of the handle, said plate and head being provided with the edges 4 and 6 placed in alignment with one another, and with the edges 3 and 5 placed out of alignment and parallel with one another, said plate and head having recesses or undercuts at the meeting portions of the edges 4, 5 and 3, 6 and the edges 3 and 5 being made convergent or non parallel in transverse section substantially as described.
. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. GEORGE HERMES. Witnesses:
WM. 0. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
