IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNlNG-SHEAR3.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,279, dated May 28, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, GEORGE D. SPIELMAN, of Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pruning-Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are details of the same.
My invention has relation to pruning-shears.
The object of my invention is chiefly to provide means whereby a bunch of grapes, a flower, or other cutting, after being severed from the vine or bush, may be safely held while being carried to a proper receptacle. The novelty of my invention consists, therefore, in the combi nation, with the cutting'blade and the curved serrated jaw, of a rubber block and a metallic clip to hold it, said block and clip being at. tached to the cutting-blade, and constructed substantially as hereinafter described.

D is a concave jaw, having a beveled or cutting-flange at b, and a series of serrations," b. E represents a clip or block of metal, secured to the inner face of the blade (3 by screws e, which render it removable. This clip is constructed with two parallel projec tions, 6 under which a block of rubber, 0 is placed, and which are provided with sharpened teeth 0, which enter said rubber and hold it securely in place. The outer edge of said rubber is cut to a convex curve nearly correspondin g to the curvature of the serrated jaw. When the shears are used for cutting roses, gathering grapes, or the like, the stems, after being out, are held between the rubber and serrated jaw, and the fruit thus prevented from injury by handling or' falling. By unscrewing the clip the shears are adapted for use in the ordinary work of prunin g. F designates sprin gs attached to the handles A B, and designed to throw or force the jaw and blade apart. G is a leather band placed over the handles, and buckled when the handles are brought together. The use of this belt is to relieve the hand in keeping the jaw and blade together, when it is required to carry the article cut to any considerable distance.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the broad shearblade 0, of the curve b and serrated jaw 1), clip E, and rubber block 6 substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The pruning-shears, provided with the clip E having theteeth e and rubber stemholder 6 substantially as and for the purpose specified.
