IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNlNG-KNIVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,229, dated May 28, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN FASIG, of West Salem, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pruning-Knife; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a top view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.

This invention has relation to tools for prunin g and grafting trees; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of cuttingedges for severing limbs, shaving the ends of the stumps smooth, splitting bowsfor grafting purposes, and of a device for prying and holding open the crevice to receive the graft, all as hereinafter described.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the handle of said tool, fitted into a metallic socket, B. 0 represents the head of said tool, flattened out into the form of a plate, and provided with the diverging rectangular blades d, having their inner, outer, and upper edges sharpened.

In pruning limbs the inner edges 0 of the knives d are used. The limb is brought into the V-sh aped recess between said edges, where a purchase is obtained. A blow of a hammer, or mallet against the end of the handle causes the limb to be readily severed. After thelimb is cut the outer edges ceof said knives are used for finishing off the stump of the limb.

The chisel ends a of the arms d are designed for use for the purpose of splitting stumps of branches, in order to adapt them to grafting. From one side of the heads 0 a bent arm, E, projects, as shown. This arm is of a wedgeform, and is sharpened on the end. The use of said arm is to pry open the crevice formed to receive the graft, and to hold said crevice open while the cuttings are being inserted.

When this tool is used for pruning a handle about five feet in length should be inserted in the socket B. When used as a grafting-tool a handle of one or two feet in length will be sufficient. v

The instrumentherein described may be used for other purposes besides th ese mentioned, when desired.

The rectangular blades are prismatic in cross-section, one side being plain, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and the other side bev eled from the sharpened edges toward the center of the blade, as indicated in Fig. 1.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is-- The pruning and grafting tool, having the socket B,head 0, arm E, and diverging rectangular blades d having chisel-edges a c c, constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
