Description
ALV. VROMAN.
WeIt-Parers.
N0 14140@ Patentedjuly 29,1873.
AM, PHo/a-L/rHoGRAPH/c co. N (aseanwfls Macaw) En S'IArns- IMPRQVEMENT in wELT-PARERS.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,406, dated July 29, 1873; application led May 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALvIN V. VROOMAN, of Roxbury, Vin the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Welt-Parers 5 and l do hereby declarel that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a welt-parer, used in the manufacture of boots, or sewed boots and shoes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
l1n order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective View of the welt-parer.
A represents a knife-block provided with a shank, B, which is inserted and secured in a handle, C. D represents theknife-blade, provided with a slot, c, through which a screw, b, passes to secure it to the knife-block, A. On the side of the blade D is the cuttingpoint d, under which is an offset, E, in the block for the passage of the pared-off portion ofthe welt. On this side of the blockA is an adjustable gage, G, which can be raised or lowered at will, enabling the operator to cut any desired width of welt without possibility 0f cutting the upper, and at the same time much more expeditious.
This tool is to be used in the following manner: When the welt is sewed on the boot and rubbed off the boot is placed on or between 4the knees of the operator, with the leg of the boot toward him. The adjustable gage G is then set between the end of the welt and the upper, and over the end of the welt, keeping the side gage pressed snugly down.- The operator then cuts to the right, and when there is sufficient of the welt cut off to run over the knife the operator seizes the part cut off with the left thumb and forefnger, after which he will go round the boot with the instrument, which will bring the welt to a uniform width.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the adjustable blade D with adjustable gage G when arran ged upon block or head A, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I'aftx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. V. VBOOMAN.
Titnesses EDWARD B. STEINERT, W. H. VROOMAN.
