Description
No. 724.669. PATENTED APR. 7, 1903.
H. GOTTRELL. V FENCE MAKERS TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED OCT- 9; 1902, N0 MODEL. I
IN VE N TOR WITNESSES 5; 4! @(W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT COTTRELL, OF NEWARK, JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO L. A. SAYRE &CO., OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A FIRM.
FENCE-MAKERS TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,669, dated April 7, 1903.
Application filed October 9, 1902. Serial No. 126,465. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT CoTTRELL, of the city of Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Makers Tools, of which the followingis aspecification.
The object of my improvement is to produce as an article of manufacture a single implement adapted for use in the construction I0 and repair of wire fences and other like purposes, having the combined parts of a hammer for driving nails or staples, of pliers for pulling wire taut, of a wire-twister, of a staple-puller, ofa nail-puller, and of a wire-cutter, all comprised in two opposing members of duplicate form, thereby obviating the necessity of using more than one die to form them or of carrying a set of separate implements for such varied use.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a top-view showing twisted Wire. Fig. 3 is a side view showing operation as staple-puller.
My invention consists in forming an implement of two opposing members of duplicate form, each comprising a handle portion having its opposite extremity turned at right angles, terminating ina hammer-face. The two parts are adapted to be jointed together so that the angles form opposite jaws. The forward faces form outwardly-extending cams, terminating in cooperating extractor-jaws. Within the jaws is a flat portion adapted for use as pliers for pulling wire taut, and the inner portion of the jaws is recessed and serrated, so as to be used to grasp wires and twist them. The jointed portion is enlarged in diameter and slotted diagonally transverse in one or more places to form wire-cutters, and the inner portions of the handles are also recessed and serrated at a point near the joint for use for twisting wire. The hammerface may have a wedge-like slotted portion or claw extending back toward the handle, 5 which may be used as a nail-puller. Such feature, however, is not intended always to be included'in the article of manufacture.
Referring .to the accompanying drawings, in all of which like letters of reference refer to similar parts, (1 represents the hammerface; a, the nail-claw; b, the staple-puller;
c, the handles; d, serrated recess in jaws to twist wire; (1, plier portion of jaw; e, serrated portion between handles for twisting wire; f, wire-cutter; g, pivot; h, twisted wire;
'5, staple-puller.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A tool of the class described consisting of two pivoted portions formed as duplicates throughout, said portions having laterally-extending hammer-heads whose forward faces form outwardly-extending cams terminating in cooperating extractor-jaws whose points abut when the tool is closed as shown and set forth. 7
Signed in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 7th day of October, 1902.
HERBERT COTTRELL.
