END CUTTING PLIEBS.
APPLICATION FILED SBPT.14, 190a.

n m e W J GEORGE E. BIIRTscHER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
END-CUTTING PLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1 1, 1909.
Application fiied'September 14, 1908. Serial No. 452,916.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BURT provided with -a centrally located cutter which runs longitudinally of the jaws so as to enable one end of the same to easily and readily grasp and out a wire or the like lying on or secured to a perfectly flat surface.
A further object is to provide the inner faces of the jaws upon opposite sides of the cutter with serrations so that the device may be used as a )lier if so desired.
To obtain t eforegoing and other objects, my invention consists in the form of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and finallypointed out in the claims hereto appended. 7
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several figures :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pliers with the jaws thereof open, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof showing the jaws closed, Fig. 3 is a front end view of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a front end view of one of the jaws, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the jaws with the portion of the handle broken away.
Referring tothe accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates the heads of the pliers A which'are composed of two levers which levers are provided with the usual handles 2. The heads l are each provided with an opening to allow the insertion of the pivot-pin 3 which is held stationary in one of the heads thereby allowing the other head to be loosely mounted upon said ivotpin so as to allow of the opening and c osing the jaws 4.
Each jaw 4 it will be observed is provided turn provided with the serrations so as to allow the liers to be used as a plier for gri ping and blending or stretching a wire or t .e like when desired.
I It will be clearly seen from Figs. 3, 4; and 5 of the drawings that the faces 8 of the jaws are lower than the faces 7 so that when the jaws are closed the joints are out of alinement with one another andthe side faces 9 of the jaws 4 being adapted to tightly engage one another as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Each jaw 4 is still further provided with a re cess or cut-away portion 10 which when the jaws are closed provide an opening 11 for the reception of the wire or the like that is desired to be bent or twisted.
Each head 1 of the 1pliers is provided with an open ended slot 12 aving a beveled or inclined face 13 which forms an edge 14 in each clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so
that the staples holding the same if such are used, need not be removed in order to loosen the wire sufliciently to grasp the same with the cutting edges of the nippers; The pliers will readily gras any wire or the like that needs to be out vfhich is lying upon a flat surface which is now impossible to do with the present stylesof pliers in use.
The various advantages of the heretofore described invention will readily sug est themselves to any person such as an e ectrician who has constant use for a pair of pliers of this character.
It is, of course, understood that slight changes may be made in the form of the jaws without departing from the principle or sacrificing any advantages of the invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z,
1. An end cutting plier comprising a pair of ivotally connected levers, a jaw integral wit each of said levers and having a flat gripping face, and cutting means intermediate the sides of said jaws running longitudinally thereof, said cutting means being ada ted to pass each other when the jaws are in c osed position.
An end cutting plier comprising a pair of ivotally connected levers, a jaw integral wit each of said levers, cutting means intermediate the sides of each jaw running longitudinally thereof, said jaws being provided with serrated faces on opposite sides of said cutting means, and a recess in each jaw adjacent said cutting means which runs parallel therewith for the reception of the cutting means when the jaws are closed.
3. An end cutting plier comprising a pair of ivotally connected levers, a jaw integral wit each of said levers, and cutting means intermediate the sides of said jaws, said cutting means coming flush with the free end of the jaws to enable same to grasp a wire or the like lying upon a flat surface and each of said jaws having a pair of gripping faces upon different planes 4. An end cutting plier connrising a pair of pivotally connected levers, a lead integral with each of said levers, a jaw integral with each of said heads, the inner faces of said jaws being provided with a central cutter running longitudinally thereof, a recess in the inner face of each jaw for the reception of said cutters when the jaws are in a closed position, and a slotted opening in each of the aforesaid heads having an inclined face to form a cutting edge.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. BURISCHER.
Witnesses HELEN F. LrLLIs, ANNA L. EKVALL.
