Description

PATENTED JULY 16, 1907.
No. 860,122.v
G. L. BLAIR. COMBINATION TOOL. APPLIUATION FILED JAN. a1, 1907.
Il li UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
GARDNER L. BLAIR, OF REDWINE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNO'R OF ONE-EIGHTH TO H. Gr. HOWARD, ONE-EIGHTH TO AMOS HOWARD, ONE-EIGHTH TO ALBERT REYNOLDS, AND ONE-EIGHTH TO H. F. WILDER, ALL OF REDWINE, KENTUCKY.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARDNER L. BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redwine, in the county of Morgan and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Combination-Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in combination tools.
The object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character adapted to be used in connection with horseshoeing, whereby such operation will be greatly facilitated. i
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinaiter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a side view/of the tool with the parts in closed position as whenl the tool is in use for driving nails, cleaning the hoofs or when using the tool as a pritchel; Fig. 2 is a similar'view, showing the parts open as when in use for cutting nails; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the parts open as when in use for clenching nails; and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the tool with the parts in closed position, and looking toward the cleaning and clenching tools.
Referring more particularlyto the drawings, l denotes the tool, which consists oi outer handles 2 and 3 and an intermediate handle 4, said handles being pivotally-connected together attheir outer or front ends, as shown. The outer ends of the handles 2 and 3 beyond their pivotal connection are provided with curved cutting jaws 5 and 6, the ends of which are provided with cutting edges whereby when said jaws are brought together constitute a pair of nippers for the purpose of cutting nails or other objects.
' On the outer sides oi the jaw 5 adjacent to its inner end is formed a hammer poll 7, by means of which the tool is used for driving nails or for similar purposes. On the outer edge of the jaw 6 is formed a series of serrations or teeth 8 adapted to coact with the teeth 9 on the inner side of the clenching jaw 10 which is formed on the outer end of the intermediate handle 4 and by means of' which the tool is adapted for use in clench- Specication of Letters Patent.
Application tiled January 31,1907. Serial No. 355,052.

ing nails after the same have been driven through the shoe and hoof.
On the outer side of the jaw lO is formed a cleaning knife or hook 12, by means of which the hoof may be cleaned and scraped. On the inner end of'the handle 3 is formed a right angularly-projecting punch or pritchel 13, by means of which the nail hole in the shoe may be cleared or enlarged and the shoe handled.
A tool constructed as herein shown and described is particularly adapted for use in connection with horseshoeing and will be found to take the place of a number of separate tools used in connection with this operation, thus greatly facilitating the work.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction andA operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any ofl the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:-
1. A combination tool comprising a plurality of pivotally-connected handles, two of said handles having coperating cutting jaws at one end thereof, another of said handles arranged to operate between said cutting-jaw-carried handles and having a jaw to coperate with the outer face of one of the said cutting jaws to form a clenching tool.
2. A combination tool comprising a plurality of pivotally-connected handles, two of said handles having coperating cutting jaws at one end thereof, one of said jaws having a toothed convex outer face, another of said 11andles arranged to operate between said cutting-jaw-ca1'ried handles and having a jaw to coperate with the said outer face of the cutting jaw to form a clenching tool.
3. A combination tool comprising a plurality of pivotally connected handles, two of said handles having coperating' cutting jaws at one end thereof, one of said jaws have teeth on its outer face, another of said handles arranged to operate between said cuttingjaW-carried handles and having a concave, toothed jaw to coperatewith the outer face of said toothed cutting jaw to form a clenching' tool.
4. A tool of the character described comprising a plurality of handles pivotally connected together, a pair of cutting jaws formed on the ends of two of said handles, and a clenching jaw formed on the end of another of said handles and adapted to coact with one of said cutting jaw to form a clenching tool.
5. A tool of the character described comprising a plurality of handles pivotally connected together, cutting jaws formed on the ends of two of said handles, and a clenching jaw formed on the end of another of said handies and adapted to coact with the outer face of one of said cutting jaws to form a clenching tool.
6. A tool of the character described comprising outer handles and an intermediate handle pivotally-connected together, coacting cutting jaws formed on one end of said 10 outer handles, a series of clenching teeth formed on the outer edge of one of said cutting jaws, and a curved clenching jaw formed on the end of said intermediate handle and having teeth formed on the inner face thereof to coact with the teeth on the said outer edge of the cutting jaw.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
