UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROY G. SHOWALTER, 0F ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR ONE-FOURTH TO J". P. REILLY, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY C. SHowAL'rnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and has for an object to provide means for effecting rapid relative adjustments of the fixed and movable jaws respectively.
In the drawing forming a portion of this application and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :-Figure l is a side view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontalsection taken on line 4;4: of Fig. 1.
The wrench comprises a shank 1 which is provided at one end with a fixed jaw 2. The said shank has one of its edges provided with a longitudinal series of ratchet teeth 3 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A movable jaw 4 of the wrench is provided with a tubular portion 5 which receives the said shank 1 whereby the former is free to slide upon the latter. The jaw 4 has pivoted thereto a dog 6 which is provided with an inwardly curved portion 7 which is adapted to engage the ratchet teeth 3 where by the sliding jaw is held against sliding movement in one direction on the shank. The said dog 6 is provided with a post 8 which is apertured as at 9 to receive the stem 10 of an actuating bar 11. The bar 11 extends against one side of the shank of the wrench and at 12 it is pivoted to a rocking lever 13. This lever is pivoted at 14 to the sliding jaw 4 and at 15 the lever has secured thereto a leaf spring 16 which has one of its ends yieldingly bearing against the rear of the shank whereby the dog 6 is normally held engaged with the teeth 3 as is evident. The lever extends downwardly at an angle from the rear of the shank whereby it may be readily manipulated to effect a release of the dog 6 from the teeth 3 whereby the sliding jaw of the wrench is free for adjustments. The shank receiving slot 17 of the sliding jaw opens onto one side of the jaw and as illustrated a detachable plate 18 is secured to. the side of the jaw and extended across the open portion of the slot 17 and arranged to combine with the walls of the slot so that the sliding jaw entirely embraces the shank, From this construction it is evident that the plate 18 can be conveniently removed, whereby the sliding jaw and all of the movable parts of the jaw rocking means may be removed. Roller bearings 19 ar j ournaled in the plate 18 and in the opposite wall of the sliding jaw and as illustrated these bearings are adapted to travel in an elongated slot 20 in the shank.
From the construction described it is evident that the jaw 4 can be quickly and freely adjusted with relation to the aw 2 and held positively in any required set position.
I claim A wrench, comprising a shank having a toothed portion, and a fixed jaw, a movable jaw carried by the shank, a lever on the movable jaw, a dog pivotally mounted in the extreme inner end of the movable jaw and disposed in juxtaposition with the toothed portion of the shank, a post extending laterally from the dog, and provided with an opening, an actuating bar pivoted at one end of the lever and having a reduced stem formed integral with the free end of the actuating bar and extending at right angles thereto, and adapted to be seated in the opening of the post for rocking movement, and means for holding the dog operatively associated with the toothed portion of the shank.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROY G. SHOWALTER.
