To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that l, HERBERT XV. Monnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loysville, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
rl'his invention relates to an improvement in the construction of Wrenches, and the primary object of the invention is to produce a wrench including a frame or casing provided with a handle and carrying a pivoted lever that has a link connection with the shank of a jaw guided within the frame or carriage, and to further provide the said carriage with a second slidable jaw having means whereby the same may be brought toward or away from the first mentioned aw and held at a desired position upon the frame or carriage, so that the said jaws may be properly adjusted to accommodate various sizes of articles to be engaged therebetween.
1t is another object of the invention to produce a wrench which shall be capable of various adjustments and which will exert a pressure against the object engaged between the jaws thereof as long as the wrench is in operation, and wherein one of the jaws will be automatically moved away from the other jaw when the wrench is not in operative position, and whereby the jaws of the wrench are normally maintained in a position to engage with an object.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specication and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

The wrench, as illustrated in the figures of the drawing, includes a frame or carriage 1 which is preferably formed from a single sheet of suitable metal bent upon itself to provide parallel Sides 2-2- The numeral designate the bandi@ fOr Specicaton of Letters Patent.

the frame or carriage, and by reference to F 1g. 2 of the drawing it will be noted that the inner end of the said handle is dispo-sed between the sides 2 of the frame or carriage and assists in maintaining the said sides in proper spaced relation. The sides 2 are also connected by suitable transverse pins 4-/1 and these pins provide bearing surfaces for the shank 5 of a jaw member 6. The inner end of the shank has pivotally connected thereto link members 7, and the said links are in turn pivotally connected, as at 8, to a lever 9 which lever is pivotally secured, as at 10, to the sides 2'of the frame or carriage.
The numeral 11 designates a flat spring which has one of its ends secured to the inner face ofthe handle 3, as at 12, and its opposite or free end exerting a pressure against the lever 9 to swing the said lever away from the handle 3 and normally move the jaw 6 away from the frame or casing 1. The frame or casing has its sides, adjacent what may be termed its outer end provided with inturned guide plates 13 which are secured thereto in any desired or preferred manner, said guide plates being disposed in a line with the notched corner 14 of the carriage and these guide plates are adapted to be received in oppositely disposed grooves 15 extending longitudinally of the head 16 of the inner jaw member 17. This jaw member is provided with an angularly extending shank 18 that has one of its edges formed with transverse teeth 19, and these teeth are adapted to be engaged by a spring pressed pawl 20 which has its tail portion 21 extending through the open longitudinal edge of the carriage or frame 1. 1t will bc apparent that by operating the dog 20, the jaw member 17 will be moved toward or away from the jaw member G and that the dog 2O will sustain the said jaw member 17 in its proper adjusted position.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed descriptio 'f' Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a wrench, a carriage having a handle, a jaw having its shank arranged within the carriage, a lever pivoted to the carriage, link members pvoted to the lever and the shank of the j aw, a spring between the handle and lever for normally swinging the lever away from the handle, and a second jaw member adjustably associated with the carriage.
ln a wrench, a substantially U-shaped carriage, a handle arranged between the sides of the carriage and secured thereto, pins connecting the sides of the carriage, a jaw having a shank arranged within the carriage and bearing upon the pins, a lever pivotally connected with the carriage, a link connection between the lever and the shank of the jaw, spring means between the handle and the lever for normally swinging the lever away from the handle, and a second and slidable jaw adjustably associated with the carriage.
3. In a wrench, the combination with a carriage having a handle, a jaw having an angular shank which is arranged within the carriage and slidable on bearing members in said carriage, a pivoted lever, a link connection between the lever and the shank, spring ineans upon the handle and contacting with the lever for normally swinging the lever away from the handle, a second jaw having a grooved head received in bearings in the carriage, said second jaw having an angular shank provided with teeth, and a spring pressed dog carried by the carriage and engaging with said teeth.
