GAS-PIPE AND RDD TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,042, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed Aug 27,1895. Serial No. 560,718. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Amos J. BIRTOH, of Ceryl, in the county of Gospel, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Wrench or Pipe-Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe and rod wrenches or tongs; and the obj cots are to provide an adjustable pivoted jaw and govern the operation of the same in its several adjustments by a cam-faced lever. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the wrench or tongs, showing the pivoted jaw and camlever in full; and Fig. 2, a plan view showing the reverse side of the tool.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views C6 is the rigid jaw, having a slot at extending from the rear of the jaw toward its forward end. The forward portion of the jaw is thickened, forming a curved abutment. Adjacent to this, but adjustable to and from it, are the curved jaw c and the governor I). These have, respectively, concave and convex faces and are connected on both sides of the fixed jaw by links (Z by means of pins e, which pass through the slot at. The rear end of the jaw has a screw-threaded aperture in which 18 mounted an adj listing-screw f, which bears against the rear pin 6.
Operating-handles G G are provided for the rigid jaw and the governor. The grasping-faces of the j aws are preferably toothed or ratchet-faced.
The operation of my wrench is as follows: The distance between the jaws is regulated by turning the adjusting-screw in or out, thus moving the pivot-pin of the jaw 0 toward the extremity of the rigid jaw or permitting the reverse adjustment. The jaws having been placed in position on the article to be operated on and the handles forced toward each other, the forward end of the governor slides along the concaved rear face of the pivoted jaw, thus acting as a cam to force its grasping-face toward the corresponding face of the rigid jaw.
Having thus described my invention, what 50 I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
In a pipe wrench or tongs, a rigid jaw having a longitudinal slot, a second jaw having a governor bearing against its rear face, the said jaw and governor connected bya link or links, and having pivot-pins extending into the slot, an adjusting-screw bearing against the pivot-pin of the governor in the slot, and handles for actuating the rigid jaw and gov- 6o ernor as set forth.
