Specification of Letters Patent.l Patented Dec.r 1, 1914,
Appucationfinea August s, 19i4. serial No. 855,847.
T0 all whom t may concern y Be 1t known that I, LAWRENCE MERCER, a
citizen of-the Unitedv States, residing at Wil- Y bur, in the county of Tyler and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in quick acting wrenches of the sliding jaw type, and the invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of device of this character in which the movable jaw may be very quickly adjusted to the work and then held in a securely iXed position in the operation of the tool. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements, and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, iny
which, l
Figure 1 is an edge view of a wrenchembodylng the principles and improvements of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking pawl for the movable jaw.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanyino` drawing by like reference characters.
Iteferring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the shank of my improved wrench, and 2 the handle thereof, the same being of any desired construction or design.
3 designates the relatively fixed or stationary jaw of the wrench which is preferably formed integral with the shaft 1, and 4 desigates the movable jaw which is mounted to slide on the shank, as shown. Preferably, both of these jaws are double and are formed on one side of the shank for engagement with nuts or the like and on the opposite side of the shank are provided with in- Set work engaging faces 5 which are trans- Vrecess 7 at one end of said sleeve.
versely serrated to adapt thewrench v foruse in connection with pipes or rods.y
As lclearly illustrated in the drawing,"the relatively movable jaw l is formed. with a longitudinally extended sleeve 6 and with a In this recess a locking pawl o r dog 8 is pivotally mounted at one end, said pawl being formed on one edgewith transversely extending teeth 9 designed to engage with complemental teeth 10 on the shank 1, the sleeve 6 being formed for that purpose intermediate of its ends with an opening 11 into which the pawl 8 isl designed to pass for the interlocking engagement of the teeth and for fiXedly holding the movable jaw in its set or adjusted position.
The pawl 8 has secured thereto, on opposite sides, spring latch bars 12, the same being riveted or otherwise secured at one end on'the opposite side faces of the pawl and extending rearwardly'beyond the latter, the rear extremities of the latch bars being normally divergent as shown, and
being designed to be pressed together by the operators ngers, whereby they may pass in between hooked lugs 13 which are formed on the sleeve 6, these lugs together forming a keeper for the latch device comprised by the bars `12 and the latter being preferablyformed in one edge with recessesflll for engagement by the hooked or shouldered ends of the lugs.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved' wrench will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, when the pawl 8 is released and swung outwardly, it is clear that themovable jaw can be very quickly adjusted toward or away from the stationary jaw, as required, and
then after the proper adjustment has thus rable device which may be very quickly oper-` ated and the parts of which may be easily manufactured and readily What I claim is n A wrench of the character described, in-
assembled.
resilient latch bars, and laterally spaced hooked lugs formed on said sleeve near said opening, and designed for engagement by said latch bars so as to hold the paWl in la locking engagement with the Shank.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
LAWRENCE MERCER. Vitnesses B. W. PERSON, J. A. UNDERWooD.
