SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,610, dated November 22, 1898i Application filed February 28, 1898. Serial No. 671,975. (No model.) y

T0 all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DAVID DICKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'renches; and I do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to wrenches, and more particularly to that class known as rapid-transit wrenches.

The object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character by means of which it may be easily and quickly engaged with a nut and lockedin said engagement by a novel fastening means.

With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved Wrench,

.showing the handles locked in closed adjustment; and Fig. 2 is a side view showing the handles separated to permit of the adjustment of the sliding jaw.

In said drawings, 1 denotes ahandlehaving at one end a fixed jaw, and 2 denotes a jaw having a sliding engagement on said handle.

3 denotes a second handle, which is pivoted to the fixed jaw and provided on its under vedge with a row of teeth or serrations 4,

adapted to engage a corresponding row of serrations or teeth on the upper end of the sliding jaw.

5 denotes a guide-pin iiXed to the handle l and adapted to engage a socket 6 in the pivoted handle 3. A coiled spring is placed upon this pin and exerts its energy to separate said handles.

7 denotes a bail pivoted to the inner end of the handle 1 and adapted to swing over and engage the inner end of the handle 3 and hold it with its teeth or serrations in engagement with the teeth or serrations on the upper end of the sliding jaw. To prevent said bail accidentally slipping from engagement with the end of the pivoted handle, I provide a latch 8, pivoted on the under edge of. the pivoted handle and adapted to engage the bail and lock it in position.

In applying the Wrench the bail is slipped from engagement with the pivoted handle and the spring will raise the teeth or serrations on said handle from engagement with the teeth or serrations on the sliding jaw. The jaw is now adjusted to the nut. The handles are now compressed, the bail swung over the end of the pivoted handle, and the latch engaged with the bail. In this position the pivoted handle is firmly locked to the sliding jaw and said jaw prevented from moving.

I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A wrench consisting of a handle having a fixed j aw, a sliding jaw mounted on said handle and provided on its upper end with teeth or serrations, a handle pivoted to the fixed jaw and having a corresponding row of teeth or serrations to engage those on the sliding jaw, a bail pivoted to the iiXed handle and adapted to swing over the inner end of the pivoted handle, and a latch pivoted'to the under edge of the pivoted handle and adapted to engage the bail and lock it in position, substantially as set forth.
