JOSEPH P. MITCHELL, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l9l,0 10, dated May 22, 1877; application filed June 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. MITCHELL, of New Bedford, county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and
, I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which is represented a perspective view of my improved wrench.
The object of the present invention is to produce an adjustable wrench, which, when the nut has been removed from the bolt, will hold it in its socket, and which may again be applied to the bolt without removing it from the socket; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts,'as will be hereinafter described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the shank or handle of the wrench, having formed upon its lower end a disk, B, and its upper end screw-threads a. The handle A has secured to its upper end a stationary jaw, O, and the two are so connected as to allow the free rotation of' the handle while the jaw remains stationary. The jaw O has a guiderod, b, projecting down from its under side,
and passing through a lower jaw, U, to guide it in its movement upon the screw-threaded part of the handle A. These jaws are formed with angular recesses c for the reception of the nut, and smaller angular recesses 01 for a similar use. The disk B dispenses with the usual wooden handles, which require the lower end of the shank or handle to be screwthreaded and the necessity of a nut and washer to secure the wooden handle in place. The simple disk obviates this and greatly cheapens the cost in their manufacture.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, an adjustable wrench, consisting of the handle A, with disk B and screw-thread a, jaws G O, the latter being threaded and both having grasping-surfaces at each end, and provided severally with recesses c d, and the rod b, connected to the jaw G and passing through the jaw O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
