IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,909, dated March 21, 1876; application filed August 6, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED T. HYDE, of Ithaca, county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to secure a rapid and accurate adjustment of the movable jaw, in relation to the fixed jaw, to accommodate them to various sizes of nuts; and it consists in connecting to the movable jaw a bar, extending to the end of the handle and parallel therewith and provided with a sectional'screw-thread for engagement withean external-threaded sleeve or thumb-nut journaled upon the main bar adjacent to the handle, all as hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.

In the drawing, A is the main bar, provided with a fixed hammer-head, (or any wellknown form of jaw,) and having its opposite end constructed to receive the removable handle.

Directly forward of the handle the bar is provided with a journal bearing to receive the revolving external threaded sleeve (1. This adjusting sleeve or nut is provided with a thread for engaging with the corresponding sectional thread on the extension-bar B. This thread is cut with a vertical and inclined face, the vertical side presenting an abutment to resist the end thrust of the bar connected to the movable jaw.

The movable jaw is constructed with an aperture, through which the main bar passes. The-upper side of this aperture is slightly beveled toward its outer end to allow of sufficient movement for the disengagement of the extension-bar from the threaded sleeve (J.

The ferrule D is constructed with an offset corresponding to the step in the ferrule of an ordinary screw-wrench, but having a mortise through which the extension-bar passes, and forming a guard to limit the movement of said bar.

The movable jaw is adjusted by disengaging the bar from the threaded sleeve 0, and sliding it upon the main bar to the desired position, when it is engaged with the sleeve and held there by the hand that grasps the handle.

When the wrench has been applied to the nut the threaded sleeve or thumb-nut C may be employed to force the movable jaw snugly against the nut, thereby taking up all lost motion which may be left by the sliding adjustment.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a wrench, the combination of the main bar A, provided with the externally-threaded sleeve 0, with the extended bar B, having sectional threads, and capable of being grasped by the hand, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
