Description

'UNITED STATES PATENT @Frien- ORVILLE H. GARDNER, OF FULTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN VISES.
l Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,328Ldated May 16, 1876; application filed February 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O. H. GARDNER, of Fulton, in the county of Oswego, and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
i clear, and exact description of the invention,
as to. swing 'at any angle with the bench, to
which it is held by a T-bolt. Upon the inner end of this plate are formed the two standards or bearings a a, the front one having a hole through it to receive the back or clutch end of the coarse screw F, and the other with a fine screw-thread cut in it to receive the -screw E. The large screw is hollow, and is used for giving speed to the movement of the jaws, while the smaller screw passes through the larger one and is used for power. The bed-plate A has a groove, I, cut in each side, so that the rear jaw O will lock in and move on the said plate, as it is propelled rapidly along by the coarse screw F. While any substance is being held between the two jaws B C, the rear end of the speed-screw F is pre` vented from pressing back by the collar G, whichts in a recess in the front standard A,
and which screw F has a clutch formed on'or in its end, which clutch connects with a second clutch, D, on the power-screw E, the twoclutches being separated by a spiral spring. When these two clutches are disconnected the speed-screw stands still, and the powerscrew, which has vthe handle H attached to its front end, and which passes back through both jaws, the speed-screw and two standards moves the front jaw B back and forth, while the rear jaw stands still. When the clutch D is moved forward in contact with the clutch G, by -means of a lever, 0,or any other suitable device, and the screw E is turned, the screw F moves as rapidly as it does, and then both jaws move back and forth.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein' shown, as it may he some what varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. l
l- Having thus described my invention I claim.
l. The combination of the hollow speedscrew F with the power-screw E, that passes through its full length, and a clutch, D, v
whereby the screws can be used together or independently of each other, substantially as shown. j
2. In a vise, the combination of two movable jaws, and two separate screws, E F, one of which screws is used for speed and one for power, and whereby the jaws can be made to move separately or together, substantially as specified.
3. The hollow screw F, having the shoulder G, in combination with thestandards a, screw E, clutch D, spring and lever O, substantially as specied.
In` testimony that l claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 15th d ay of February, 1876.
