WRENCH. No. 259,363. Patented June 13,1882.
NITED STATES WILLIAM BUSHEY, OF VINCENNES, INDIANA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,863, dated June 13, 1852A Application filed November 16, 1880. Renewed May 1S, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, WILLIAM BUsHEY, of Vincennes, Knox county, and State ot'Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Combination-Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the combination, arrangement, and construction of parts ot' an improved wrench which is especially adapted to use upon nuts, bolts, and tap-heads ot' all kinds and classes .varying in sizes from one-fourth of an inch or less to four inches, or larger, in diameter; and it will be herein more minutely and fully set forth and described with referenceto the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view ot' a wrench containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line x m of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, on a smaller scale, of the movable jaw A.
The movable jaw A is recessed on its under side to Jt the guide-rib G. C is a recess on under side ot' A to lit guide-rib C.
My wrench consists of three distinct parts or pieces, A, B, and I), C being the guiderib upon which the recess C fits. A is the upper or movable portion of said wrench, and slides backward or forward upon the guiderib G, as the operator may have occasion to use the jaws at either end of said part A. B is the Inain stock or handle of said wrench. U is the guide-rib upon which A moves, and is a portion ot' B. D is a thumh-screw which binds or fastens A and B together.
By moving A on G so that the jaws b 0n A and t' on B meet the object to be held the largest wrench is formed, and bodies of the largest capacity of the wrench may be grasped. By reversing the movement of A, so thatj on A and j on B meet the object, the jawsj and j form a second wrench, whose use is similar to the former one, (b on A and il on B,) except that it is to be used upon bodies of a (Model.)
smaller size. D the part A is iirmly pressed down on the guiderib C on B', the serrations 7c' on A and 7c on B meeting and entering the cavities of each other. When the thumb-screw D has been thus firmly screwed down the instrument is ready for use, C fitting the recess C', and k and lc meeting and entering cach other assist D in binding and holding the parts A and B together, and when either the jaws b and tor j and j are to be used, add greater strength to the wrenching power of said instrument. C andU also facilitate the moving or adjust- Inent ot A on B. On the handle ot' the main stock or portion of wrench B are g, larger, and g, smaller, cavities for use upon nuts, taps, and bolt-heads of smaller sizes and in more diticult position than those used upon or worked At the small or hanby the jaws Z) i andjj. dle end of B is f,- a socket-wrench, Whose use is similar to g and g. Its capacity is the minimum ofthe instrument, as f is the smallest cavity or Wrench of said instrument.
What I claim as new in my wrench, and de sire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with the part B, having jaw z', guide-rib C, and serrations k, the slotted movable part A, having jaw b, serrations 7c', and recess C', and the clamping-screw D, passing through the slotted part A and into the part B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2.- In combination with the part B, having guide-rib C, and jaws vi and j, the slotted Inovable part A, having jaws b aud j' and recess C', and the clamping-screwD,passing through the slotted part A and into the part B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature iu presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BUSHEY.
