DANIEL 'I-I. DONNELLY, OF BRANFORD, CONNECTICUT.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatcntedDec. 14:, 1915.
Application filed J'u1y 3, 1915. Serial No. 37,913.
The present invention has for its primary object to provide means whereby theslidable wrench jaw may be very easily and quickly adjusted along the shank of the wrench and positioned with respect to the stationary jaw. 1
It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a wrench having a shank and an adjusting screw mounted therein, a jaw slidable upon the shank, and a spring pressed nut mounted in the jaw and engaged with a screw, said nut being adapted to be manually disengaged from the screw whereby the jaw may be freely moved longitudinally on the shank.
It is an additional general object of the invention to improve and simplify devices of the above character, reduce their manufacturing cost to a minimum and provide a wrench which is extremely strong, durable and serviceable in actual use.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the ac companying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a wrench constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the shank of the wrench which is preferably of rectangular form in crosssection and is provided with a stationary jaw 6 upon one end. The shank 5 is formed with a longitudinal bore in which the rotatable adjusting screw 7 is mounted, one end of this screw being seated in a bearing socket 8 provided in the jaw 6, said end of the screw having an annular groove to receive a retaining screw 9 which is threaded in one side of the jaw. Upon the other end of the shankfi, collar 10 is detachably secured and provides a bearing for the opposite end of the adjusting screw, and to the end of the screw projecting beyond said bearing, the handle 11 is rigidly fixed by means of a pin, indicated at 12.
The sliding or adjustable jaw13 of the wrench is mounted upon the rectangular shank 5 and the body of this jaw is formed with a rectangular opening 1a of somewhat greater dimensions than the shank 5, and with this opening a second opening 15, formed in the jaw, communicates. In the latter opening, the rectangular shank portion16 of a nut 17 is slidably mounted. The
nut ll is provided with a curved threaded face for engagement with the screw threads of the ad ustlng screw 7 and this nut is movable in a longitudinal slot 5 formed in one side of the wrench shank 5. Upon one side of the adjustablewrench jaw '13, a guide plate 18' is secured, said plate having an opening 19 therein through which the shank 16 is disposed. A nut or other suitable finger piece, indicated at 20, is secured to the end of this shank. Between the guide plate 18 and the side face of the jaw 13, a coil spring 21 is arranged upon the shank 16 of the nut, one end of said spring bearing against a shoulder 22 formed upon said shank. The spring thus acts to normally force the nut inwardly and hold the same in engagement with the threads on the screw 7 1n the operation of the invention, when it is desired to quickly adjust the jaw 13 to position the same with respect to the stationary jaw 8, the finger piece 20 is grasped and the nut 17 pulled outwardly against the action of the spring 22 so that said nut is disengaged from the screw 7 The jaw 13 may now be freely shifted longitudinally upon the wrench shank and when the nut 17 is released the spring 22 immediately acts to again engage the same with the threads on the screw 7, whereby the jaw is held in its adjusted position. A finer adjustment of the jaw may now be obtained by simply turning the handle 11 so that the screw 7, 00- operating with the nut 17, will move the jaw in the desired direction.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of my invention will be clearly and fully understood.
It will be seen that I have produced a simply constructed and very desirable wrench whereby the jaw may be readily adjusted in order to enable the wrench to be applied to nuts of various sizes. It will, of course, be understood that the wrench may be manufactured in various sizes and the shape of the wrench jaws varied, as may be desirable when the wrench is to be employed for a particular purpose.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device, it will be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is The herein described wrench comprising in combination the following elements, to wit, a shank having a longitudinal bore and a slot communicating with said bore and opening upon one side of the shank, said shank having a fixed'jaw on one end, an adjusting screw extending through the bore opening through which the cylindrical end.
of said shank is disposed, and a coil spring arranged upon the cylindrical portion of said shank between said plate andrthe end of the shank body to yieldingly hold said nut in cooperative engagement with the threads upon the adjusting screw, whereby the adjustable jaw is locked against sliding movement upon the wrench shank independently of the adjusting screw. 1
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
