PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,909, dated June 14, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN FLANAGAN, of Newburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same taken through the line 00, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience by enabling the operator to turn pipes of different sizes with the same wrench.
Theinvention consists in constructinga pipe 1 wrench with an angular stationary jaw, a slotted shank, and an inclined handle made in one piece, a movable jaw having a concaved outer end, and a fastening-nut, and a swiveled screw for adjusting the movable jaw, whereby the wrench can be adjusted to grasp pipes of different sizes, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the stationary jaw B,thejawshank, and O the handle, which parts are made in one piece.
The jaw A is made with an angular face, as shown in Fig. 2, to give it a better hold upon the pipe.
The shank B of the jaw A is slotted longitudinally to receive the shank or tenon D of the movable jaw E.
The handle 0 projects at an angle with the shank B, so that the hand-screw F, by which the movable jaw E is adjusted, can enter the slot of the shank B in line with its length. The screw F passes through a screw-hole in the end of the shank B, and through a smooth hole in the shank D, where it is securedin place by a pin and washer or other suitable means.
Application filed May 7, 1881.
(ModeL) The part of the screw F that passes through the shank D is made smooth and smaller than the threaded part of the said screw, so that the said shank will be held securely between the shoulder and the washer and pin of the said screw. By this construction the screw F will he swiveled to the shank D of the jaw E. so that the said jaw E can be moved toward and from thejawAby turning the said screw F.
The movable jaw E is held to its seat upon the slotted shank B by anut, G, screwed upon a screw formed upon the shank D, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The forward end of the movable jaw E is concaved transversely, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, to form two edges to take hold of the pipe to be turned, so that when one of the said edges becomes worn or (lull the said jaw E can be reversed and the other edge used. With this construction the jaw E can be readily adjusted to adapt the Wrench to be used for turning pipes of different sizes, and when adjusted will grasp and hold the pipe firmly.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In pipe-wrenches, the combination of an angular stationary jaw, a slotted shank, an inclined handle, a movable jaw having a concaved outer end, a fastening-nut, and a swiveled screw, as shown and described.
2. Apipe-wrench constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the angular stationary jaw A, the slotted 75 shank B, and the inclined handle 0, the movable jaw E, the swiveled adjusting-screw F, and the fastening-nut G, as set forth.
