Description
ITE srArE FIC WM. BUTLER, OF LITTLE FALLS, NEW YORK.
VISE.
T 0 all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I/VILLIAM BUTLER, of Little Falls, Herkimer county, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vises for Blacksmiths7 Purposes and for other Uses; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
To enable others to make and use my invention I proceed to describe its construction 'and operation, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed and making part of this specification.
Figure 1, a side elevation; F ig. 2, view looking down upon it; Fig. 3, plan of the tongue; Fig. 4, side elevation of the same; Fig. 5, the sliding jaw; F ig. 6, the adjusting pin; F ig. 7 perspective view of the sliding jaw; Fig. 8, section of the bar; Fg. 9, end of the bar.
The bar (O) is bolted or secured to the work bench, and the jaw or head (A) is permanent. In the broad channel at the top of the bar (see F ig. S for a section) the tongue D slides; this is a fiat bar of iron or brass perforated with holes, the end toward the permament jaw A being turned down a few inches, and the end thus turned down containing a screw hole to receive the screw F, which is secured in its place by a nut at the end. This slide is the importantfeature of my improvement; by means of it the adjusting the vise is simple, and not liable to get out of order; besides, that the whole is so simple in its construction, that any mechanic could make it. The sliding jaw sits upon the permanent bar C, and clasps the fiange on each side, see Figs. 3 and 7. It is thus held firmly upon the bar, C, except that it can slide freely. Vhen it is placed upon the bar, and the slide or tongue D, is in place the adjusting pin, E, (Fig. 6), is set into the sliding jaw, (in the hole provided for the purpose see F ig. 7) and made to extend through into the holes of the slide or tongue D. To change the positionof the sliding jaw of the vise, the pin, E, is lifted out of the tongue, D, and then the jaw can be moved freely to the desired point.
The adjusting pin E, is secured from being drawn entirely out from the hole in the sliding jaw of the vise, by alip or projection over it of part of the jaw, see Fig. 1.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
The arrangement of the sliding bar with screw attached thereto, with reference to the fast jaw, A, and the moving jaw B, when said sliding bar is provided with a series of holes or their equivalents, and said jaw B, is provided with a pin or its equivalents, whereby B can be set at varying dist-ances With respect to A, and that distance afterward regulated by the screw.
