Be it known that I, ALONZO WHITCOMB, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester, and State. of Massaehusctts, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the Planing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making; a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view.

The moi-carriage, which slides upon this cross-head, is not shown, us it has no connection withmy invention.

' Cross-heeds of planing-machines are usually clamped to the upright sides by means of bolts and nuts. This mode of clamping obliges the workman to go to the opposite side of the machine in order to secure both ends of the head. The object of my invention is to obviate this necessity, and to render the operation of clampingthe cross-head much easier and'more expeditious.

My invention consists in clamping the cross-head to the upright sides by means of lovers, D, by a single movement of the handle I. These levers have their fulcrum at E, and are operated by means of the handle and lever I and'iT, through the medium of the slide H and the roller F. The roller F works on a pin in the end of the levers. Theelide H hasan inclined surface near its inner end, which acts upon this roller when the slide is moved lengthwise. 5

To clamp thecross-head to the upright sides, it is only necessary to move the handle I sufiiciently to bring -the thickest part of the slide II opposite the centre of the roller F, which causes the opposite end of the levers D to bind upon a lip formed upon the inner face of the upright sides, best seen in the sectional drawing, fig. 2, at o.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination 0! the uprights B, cross-head G, and the pivoted levers D, arranged to operate substantially as described, for the purpose of readily adjusting the cross-head of a planer, and securing the same in position.
