TO ALLl WBOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Bre it known that I, HENRY KASSING, olf the city, county, and State 'of NewYork, have invented a new and improved Machine for Cutting Veneers, and lthat the folio-iving description, taken in connection with the accom panyingdrarringmhereinafter:referred to,-forms a fulland exact specification of the same, wherein. I have set forth the nature and principles of m`y`said improvements bywliich` my invention may be distinguishedA from all othersof asimilar class, -togetber'with'such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by LettersPatent.
This invcntionrelates te a new and improved machine for cutting veneers, and consists in the employment or use of a reciprocating knife, arranged to work ina plane slightlyinclined from a vertical position, in con. nect'ion with a lterally-moving log-carriage; Vall being combined and `arranged in such a manner, that the knife is made to operate with a drawing cnt,l and perform itsfwork in a perfect manner and with but a. moderate expenditure of power. In-the accompanying sheet of'drawingsi v Figure 1 isa front-view of my invention,
Figure 2a transverse .vertical sectionv of the same, .taken inthe line :v w, tig. 1.
Similar letters of referenceindicate like parts. Y o A represents the frame of the maehine, whieh may be constructed in 'any proper manner to support the working parts. This frame has two guides, d @attached to'it 4at each sideof'its top or upper part, and between these' guides, slides B are fitted, and allowed to move freelyup and down, the knife-stock B being secured between the slides. ,"The guides tra are `slightly/inclined from'a vertical plane, as shown clearly inpg. 2, and tho slides I3- of ,the knifestock are Acom iected by rods with crank-pulleys c c, on a..ldrivingsl1aft, C, in the lower part ofthe frame A; D represents a knife, attached to the-stock B', and 'E is an adjustable gauge,\itt`ed on a bar, F, the, ends of which are attached to the slides B.` So far as the construction andparrangement ofthe v knife-stock and gauge are concerned, there is nothingessentiallynew, but the inclination of the guides. au is new, and attended with an important result, as will Abe hereinafter mentioned. G is a. bar,lto which the log orA bolt from` which `the veneers are cut is attached. Thisbar G is' attached to' a. carriage, H, which is placed on the top of the frame A, andarranged in suchia manner that it may move freely thereon in a lateral direction.
The carriagemaybe thus moved or opera-ted by means of straps I I, attached to'the under side ofthe carriage,
and passing over pulleysJ J', and Aconnected to levers K K, one at each side of tlielower'part of the frame A, said'levei's being acted upon by cams L L, onthe driving-shaft C, rvhch cams are placed in a reverse position onl the shaft, so that the straps I I will-'be actuated or drawn down al ternately,`in order to give a. reciprocating movement to thecarriage H. ,Tlre bar G, to which the log is attached, is fitted on ways or `guides cl d; on the carriage H, and isadjusted by means ofthe worm-shaft'M, the screws M', and worin-wheels N. The length ofI the movement o f the carriageA H should be about equal to the length of the movement of the knife, and it will be seen thatv owing to. thelongitudinal movement given t the log or bolt, while the knife 4D is cutting a veneer from it, a drawing cut is virtually obtained, and the knife made to perform its Work smoothly, and with but a moderate expenditure of power. When` the knife D is drawn down, tbe connecting-rods bdraw and4 keep thc slides B in contact with the rear guides a,a`nd prevent any unnecessary lateral play of the slides between the guides. The inclination ofthe guides a a admits of this. result `being perfectlyattaincd, to rvit, a pressure of the slides B against the rear guides duringthe descent and working movement of the knife, whereby the latter .is made to cut with a firm, unwavering stroke, which insures smooth 'and even workbeing done. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The norm-shaft M, Worm-wheels N, screws M', and bar G, `upon the inclined giu-ide d, all constructed, arranged, and opereting'upon the laterall'ymoving table H, as herein described for the purpose specified.
' r vHENRY KASSING.
