Description

UNITED sTATEsy PATENT oEEIcE.
FLORIAN HESZ, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,034, dated June 12, 1855.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it lmown that I, FLORIAN HESZ, residing in the city of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-A steads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my improvement consists in the employment of four levers, one attached to each post of the bedstead, on the inside, for holding the side and end rails of the bed to their place-the said levers being operated by four diagonal rods attached to a plate under the center of the bed, the said plate being made to work up and down on a screw provided with a nut-,
and the opposite end of the rods are attached to hooks on the lower end of the le- Vers, so as when the plate is forced down by the screw under the center of the bed, and to which the rods are attached, the upper end of the levers are pressedon the upper edge of the rail, and thereby holds them firmly to the posts, the diagonal rods serving at the same time to hold the whole bed firmly together. y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation by referring to the accompanying drawings and to the figures of reference marked thereon, similar gures referring to corresponding parts.
Figure l, represents a top view of the bed in a ,complete state, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the manner of holding the rails to the post.
1, 1, and 2, 2, represent the side and end rails of the bedstead. 3, 3, are the posts to which they are attached. The rails are bent at their ends as represented at 13, 13, and let into grooves made in the post by mortising or otherwise.
12, 12, represent levers provided with a hook at their lower end (seen in Fig. 2,) and a cross-piece 14, at the top end, which is brought on the top and ends of the rails as represented in Fig. 1, said levers being attached to the inside of the post to projecting ears 15, 15, and operated by diagonal rods 4, 4, 4, 4, which draw the lower ends of the levers 12, 12, out, by means of the plate 6 and screw and nut 7 and 11, the rods 4, 4, 4, 4, being att-ached to the said plate, and the screw made to force it down and thereby bring the upper endsof the levers 12, firmly on the side and end rails and secure the whole together as represented in Fig. 1.
l0, represents a bar attached to the side rails for securing the tightening screw 7 to, as represented in section in Fig. 2.
8, 8, and 9, 9, represent rods for supporting the bedding.
The whole or part of the bedstead can be made of wood or iron, and in place of using rods for supporting the bedding, ropes and sheeting may be used, according to the notions of persons using them.
Vhat I claim as my improvement and desire to secure by Letters Patent are- The four levers 12 attached to the inside of the posts, in combination with the diagonal rods 4, 4, 4, 4, and plate 6 connected with the screw 7, all for the purpose of holding the side and end rails of the bedstead firmly to the posts, as set forth in the foregoing specifications.
FLORIAN HESZ.
