WILLIAM G. PANCOST, OF GENEVA, OHIO.
CHEESE-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,065, dated January 8, 1856.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. PANoosT, of Geneva township, Ashtabula county, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Cheese Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar construction of a power press for pressing cheese and other bodies, which at. once combines power with simplicity, durability, and convenience in using, the power or principle of which is a spiral grooved wheel or spiral shaped screw A, of cast iron or other hard metal, whose shaft lying horizontally is secured in two upright standards B, which standards may be wood or metal and secured to the upper part of press by notches or bolts. If of wood there should be metal boxes for the gudgeons or ends of shaft to turn in. The spiral wheel is turned by means of a lever C, worked on a ratchet on the shaft. A spiral wheel without the use of gearing, which construction admit-s of a weight being attached to end of lever, C, thereby preserve a continual pressure; under the spiral wheel is a movable block or slide, D, which rests on the substance to be pressed, to which is attached a grooved friction roll E, also of cast iron or other metal, which roll moves on a steel bolt or mandrel that is made stationary in said slide D, and on which the roll, E moves from right to left as the spiral wheel is turned, the periphery or edge of screw of which, resting in the groove of friction roll, said roll being placed at small end of spiral wheel is moved by it as it turns toward the large end, thereby causing the slide to move downward, and to raise said slide, there is a link or hook attached to it, the spiral wheel is turned half way back, which throws it out of the groove of roll and the roll moved back by the hand. the link is then taken up by pawl or hook on lever and raised. rlhe slide is then retained in the upper position by a button while the substance to be pressed is arranged, the bolt being steel and smooth the friction of moving roll sidewise is destroyed by its rolling on the bolt in a proper proportion to its side movement. There is also attached to the front parts of said press two strips or pieces having a long mortise in the 'upper end secured to the sides of press with bolt or screw with large head. The lower end of said pieces are drawn out at pleasure and stand in a slanting position, the lower ends resting on the floor. These are to receive a roll, F, for the convenience of placing the cheese hoop, to put in curd, or turn cheese. Uien not in use the roll may be laid away and the side pieces by means of the long inortise placed back out of the way.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The spiral grooved wheel A, in combination with the self adjusting wheel E, for the purpose set forth.
