Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROYAL PARCE, OF PITCHER, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING LOCKS AND 'JTAEIERINGF ENDS OF WOODEN HOOlPS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,097, dated June 19, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL PARCE, of the town of Pitcher, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Cutting Locks in Wooden Hoops for Coopers Use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the entire machine; Fig. 2 is a view of the bedpiece, containing the stationary cutter, and guides to the upper, or movable cutter; Fig. 3 is a view of the upper jaw, or movable cutter.
The same letters refer to like parts.
lThe letters A, A, represent the bed-piece, which is supported on legs, or may be used o-n a bench of convenient height. This bedpiece, has an opening at E, the front of which has the form or shape of the lock to be cutin the hoop, which opening, so far as necessary, is faced with metal, forming a proper foundation or bed, on which the hoop is to rest while the lock is being cut.
B, Fig. 3 is the upper jaw, or movable cutter, which works between the guides D, D, Fig. 2, and is attached thereto by a rod Gr, passing through the guides D, D, and the movable cutter B, forming a hinge.
C, C, are knives or cutters, with which the front end, and side of the jaw B, is faced; corresponding in shape, with the metal-faced opening E, Fig. 2, the knife on the side forming an angle, with the curved knife on the end of the jaw, the one on the side, to cut the hoop transversely, and the other longitudinally, the hoop, being prevented, by a guide from passing too far under the knives.
F, is a handle or lever, attached to the movable j aw, and passing down through the opening, in the bed-piece, so as to be out of the way of the hoop, and is operated by the hand, or by attaching a treadle, may be operated by the foot of the operator.
rThe aw B, should be made with suficient weight on the end opposite the knives to raise the knives, when at rest, so as to be ready at all times, to receive the hoops; orv
a spring may be used for the purpose.
K, K, are gages, attached to a movable rod H, governed by set-screws 1, 1, for the purpose of regulating the length of the hoop between the locks. The gages K, K, are of thin metal, and will spring sufficient to allow the necessary variation between the chine, and quarter hoops.
L, is a knife attached at one end, to the frame or bed-piece A, A, and used for shaping the ends of the hoops in a proper manner.
The hoop, being prepared to have the lock cut, is placed on the bed-piece, under the knives, and being held firmlv, the knives are brought down by the handle or lever, F, and the lock cut by one, or more motions. The hoop is then reversed, and the'lock already cut, is hooked on to one or other of the gages, as the length may require, and the lock cut in like manner, and the end of the hoop, shaped by the knife L.
I do not claim the use of gages for obtainA ing the length of hoops, between the locks, as of my invention, but only, as used in connection with my machine; but, not being aware that there is in use, any device, or machine, for cutting locks, other than the adz, saw or knife.
I do claim- The whole combination as described, as being my invention, and, as being new, and useful, as combined and especially, the principle of cutting locks in wooden hoops, by means of knives, or other cutting apparatus, having substantially, the form of the lock required to be made, and cutting both transversely and longitudinally, by the same movement, no matter in what other combination found.
ROYAL PARCE.
