Description

` of the plate C.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS STRANGE AND THOMAS B. SMITH, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR SAWING HOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 3,531, dated September 4, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELIAS STRANGE and THOMAS B. SMITH, both of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Sawiug Hoops from Poles for Barrels, &c. and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a transverse vertical section of the same, a', Fig. 2, showing the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of same, y y, Fig. l, showing the plane of section. Fig. 3 is a horizontalsection of same, .a .2, Fig. 2, showing the plane of section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for sawing barrel-hoops from poles; and it consists in the employment or use of reciprocating saws and feed-rollers arranged one saw and roller in a stationary frame and the other saw and roller in a sliding frame, as will be presently shown, whereby the saws are made 'to saw slabs or strips of equal thicknesses throughout at opposite sides of the poles.
To enable others skilled iu the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a frame, which may be constructed in'any proper manner to support the working parts. On the upper part of the frame there are secured two vertical plates B C. To one side of the plate B vertical guides d are attached, and on the corresponding side ot the plate C a plate D works, said plate D having guides b b attached to it, which guides work in grooves in the top and bottom edges To the plate D there are attached vertical guides a, similar to those on the plate B.
0n the vertical guides a on the plate B a saw-sash E works, and on the guides dof the plate D a sash F works. Each sash at its inner end is provided with a saw G, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and to the plates B D there are attached arms e, which project laterally from the inner edges of said plates and have f a bent lever J, to the outer end of which is 1 connected a spiral spring K. The inner end of this lever is connected to the plate D.
L is a shaft on the lower part of the frame A, said shaft having a crank M on it, to which the lower ends of connecting-rods N N are attached, the upper ends of the rods N being connect-ed to the lower parts of the sashes E F. A belt g passes around a pulley h on the shaft I and a pulley z' on the Shaft L.
On the upper part of the frame A there are secured two small vertical frames O O, one in front and one back of the saws G, and to these frames pendent bars P P are secured. On the upper part of the frame and in line with the saws G are placed friction-rollers Q Q. These friction-rollers are underneath the pendent bars P.
Operation: Motion is given the shaft L in any proper manner, and a vertical reciprocating motion is given the sashes and saws by means of the crank and connecting-rods. The pole (see S) is placed or works between the pendent bars P and friction-rollers Q, and also between the feed-rollers H H, which are operated by the screws d d and pinions e e. The saws cut off the opposite slabs or strips from the pole, and as the pole increases in thickness from its point toward the butt Jthe movable plate F is forced outward in consequence of the pressure against the feedroller attached to the movable or sliding plate, and the saws are consequently spread apart and brought nearer together according as the diameter of the pole varies, and the slabs or strips are sawed of an equal thickness throughout. The spring K causes the feedroller attached to the movable plate to bear at all times against the pole. The pendent bars P serve as weights to keep the pole properly in place while being sawed. The feedrollers turn the pole, if crooked, so that it 'will 'be properly presented to the saws, which will in consequence out longitudinally With the grain of the Wood.
What- We Claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment of tWo reciprocating saws Gr Gr, arranged as herein shown-Viz., one smv being secured in a laterally-sliding sash and the other n at permanent sash, or one which only has a reciprocating motion in at vertical direction. v
