Description

Wmme/Is:
N. PETERS, PHDTO-LITHOGHAPHER. WASHINGTON. D, C,
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
JOHN JACK, OF FAYETTEVILLE, OHIO.
SAW-GUMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,788, dated October 10, 1854.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN JACK, of Fayetteville, Brown county, Ohio, have invented an Improved Machine for Gumming Saws by Hand-Power, of which machine I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l, is a plan of the machine about one half the full size; Fig. 2, an elevation and sectio-n on the line w Fig. l, and Fig. 3 an end elevation, the same part-s being marked with the same letters in all the figures.
A A are two jaws of cast or wrought iron from twelve to twenty inches long, supporting the plate B which is of steel and shaped to receive C, a suitably shaped cast steel die which is bo-rne by D, the die-lever revolving on cl, an iron pin having its bearings in l (l, two lugs made for the purpose and forming part of the jaws. i
'Ihe opposite end of the die-lever D is forked to provide bearings, the pin e on which revolves E, a friction roller against which works F, an eccentric maneuvered by G, a hand lever Il, or more inches long, and revolving on Z d, the iron pin having its bearings in b Z9, two lugs formed on the aws for that purpose.
The jaws A A may be of cast or wrought iron; they may be cast on an iron bed-piece as shown in the drawings or bolted-together and fastened on a wooden bed piece, the latter supporting the foot of the spring marked I-I.
The manner of operating my machineis to place iton a convenient solid stand or support, the die and plate being properly placed and fastened; place the saw between them in the right position; operate the eccentric lever bringing the parts into the pofor want of wire I have made of thin metall in the model but which I would prefer to have made of wire) and prepa-re for a new stroke.
I am aware that all the devices used in this machine are old, or well known; that they are in common use for various operations of slitting, punching and shearing metals; I am aware that the a plication of a lever working an eccentric irectly over the die and plate has been made patented and claimed for the purpose of gumming saws by others. I therefore lay no claim to these devices, nor to their application to gumming saws, nor to the use of the handlever and eccentric generally for the purpose of forcing the die, into the plate, nor to the friction roller as a means of diminishing friction in the working of eccentrics for producing pressure generally, this de- JOHN JACK.
