SHEARS FOR CUTTING FLAT AND ROUND METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,996, dated November 1, 1881,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, OHARLEsBURDIoK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shears for Outting Flat and Round Metal; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is designed to combine in one tool or machine facilities for cutting the two descriptions of metal named.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line mm, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detail of the invention, and Fig. la top or plan view of the same art.

A is a stationary arm, which preferably is placed in a substantially horizontal position, and mounted upon a foot or stand, A which may be held in a vise or secured to a bench or table by belts or screws. On the arm A is formed one of the jaws for cutting flat metal, as shown at a, at which point it is provided with a suitable steel cutter, I), inserted and attached in the usual manner. At A is the fulcrum of the movable arm or lever B, upon which arm is formed the other cutting-jaw, a, also provided with an inserted steel cutter, b, in the usual manner. At the opposite end of the stationary arm A is a shaft, 0, upon which is mounted a segmental pinion, G, which carries an arm or lever, G, inserted in a socket formed upon the pinion. The corresponding end of the movable lever B is provided with a segmental rack, B, which engages with the pinion G, and operates by the partial revolution of the pinion to open and close thejaws a and a. Each end of the rack is provided with a stop, b, which, by coming in contact with the socket in either the upper or lower position of the lever-handle, prevents a disengagement of the pinion from the rack. perforated or bored out to receive the cylindrical steel die I). The die is provided with perforations of sizes to suit different gages or diameters of round iron or wire, as shown. The movable arm B is provided with an inserted steel shearin g-plate, E, which rests within a dovetailed recess formed in the arm. The shearing-plate E is preferably made of wedge or taper form to facilitate its withdrawal from its recess when desired. The upper edge of the shearing-plate E is provided with a semicircular groove. The cylindrical die D is secured in the arm A by a set-screw, d. The die is provided with a projection having flattened sides, to enable it to be revolved so as to bring any one of its perforations opposite to andto register with the semicircular groove 0 of the shearing-plate E.
By operating the movable jaw A through the'medium of the gearing G and B, the cutting devices for both flat and round metal are put in action. These may be used either separately or together. If desired, different shearing-plates E, with semicircular grooves of various sizes, may be used for different dimensions or gages of round iron or wire; but this is not considered essential.
I do not claim, broadly, shears for cutting flat and round iron; neither do I claim in such tools perforated dies or cutters for cutting round iron of different sizes, my invention consisting in the construction of parts and their combination as follows, viz:
