SOIL PIPE CUTTING MACHINE. No. 430,727. Patented June 24, 1890.
285120., PMo'rO-urnm, wAsmNu'rnN n c UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST C. G. CALEBAND JOHN B. COUTURE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SOIL-PIPE-CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,727, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed March 31, 1890. Serial No. 345,961. (No model.)
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST C. G. CALEB and JOHN B. COUTURE, both citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyaho'ga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Soil-Pipe-Cutting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for cutting pipe of the sizes usually used as soilpipe by plumbers, and has for its object to greatly facilitate, cheapen, and improve the work of cutting such pipes, which heretofore has generally been done by means of the hammer and chisel; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and combinations of mechanism, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1- is a side" elevation of our machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, and Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the machine having the vise removed for showing the cutting mechanism.
A represents a half-circle guide-frame firmly attached to a suitable bed-plate orframe B.
C represents a heavy ring fixed to turn in said guide-frame A, being held by clips 0 0, through which the ring slides. Within this ring is arranged the cutting mechanism, consisting as follows:
D D are two right and left hand screws, supported at each end in suitable bearings d d in the ring, and at their middle part by arms d (P. On the upper ends of each of said screws is provided a pinion e e, and in a suitable bearing e is placed a shaft F, carrying a gear E, meshing with said pinions, and designed as a means for turning said screws.
G G are two ci oss bars having screwthreaded nuts g g on each end, playing on the said screws D D on each side of their middle part.
H H are also cross-bars having non-screwthreaded nuts or eyes it h on each end and also sliding on said screws D D. The bars H H are connected to the bars G G by means of springs s s, and carry cutting-tools T T, consisting of curved saw-blades adj ustably fastened in slots in the middle part of said bars.
At a suitable distance from said cutting mechanism is provided a vise for holding a pipe to be cut. This consists of two posts P P, firmly fixed to the bed-plate or frame E, having a cross-head Q, in the middle of which is a screw-threaded nut q, through which a screw R plays.
N is a movable clamping jaw having grooved guides n n on each end, which slide on the sides of the posts P P, and is connected by a swivel-joint at its middle part to the lower end of said screw R, by which saidjaw is moved up or down. The under side of said jaw is provided with a roughened surface.
0 is a lower movable or adjustable jaw set in guideways p p on the insides of the two posts P P, the top of which is curved and has a roughened surface. On the inside of the posts are provided rack-teethV V, and to the sides of the jaw O are fixed pawls W W, by which said jaw may be adjustably set to ac commodate the vise to different sizes of pipe. The one crank may be used for turning the shaft F or screw R.
The method of using this machine is as follows: The pipe to be cut is clamped in the vise, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, with the end between the cutters. The cutters are run together onto the pipe by rotating the screws D D by means of the shaft F and gear E. Now, by turning the ring C in the guide-frame B, by using theshaft F as a handle, giving the ring half-revolutions, and as fast as the cutters enter, the shaft F is turned for drawing the cutters inward. In this manner the pipe is quickly and smoothly out off.
Having described our invention, we claim .1. In a machine for cutting pipe, the combination of a guide-frame A, supported on a suitable bed or frame B, a ring 0, fixed to turn in said guide-frame and having the right and left hand screws D D journaled therein, a shaft F, gear E, and pinions e e, for turning said screws, the cross-bars G G, having nuts 9 g playing on said screws, the cross-bars H II, also having eyes sliding on said screws D D and attached to the bars G Gby springs s s, and having the cutting-blades T T adjustably attached, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the pipe-cutting mechanism hereinbefore described, the vise racks V V on said posts, all constructed and for holding the pipe, consisting of posts P P, arranged to operate substantially as and for 10 standing on bed B, cross-head Q, provided the purpose set forth.
with nut q,and screWR,playingtherethrough, AUGUST C. G. CALEB. the clamping-jaw N, attached by swivel-joint JOHN B. COUTURE. to said screw and having guides n n, the ad- \Vitnesses:
justable jaw 0, fixed in guides 10 p on posts GEO. W. TIBBITTS,
P P, and having pawls W W, engaging with ABNER SLUTZ.
