Description

waited irlev aient Qtllliire.
Letters Patent No. 96,957, dated November 16, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-WRENCH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl:v of the same To all whom 'it may concern:
vBe it known that l, CHARLES POMEROY, of Mattoon, in the State of Illinois, have inventeda new and and `useful Improvement in Pipe-Tongs: and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andn exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication, in which- 'Figure lis a side elevation, with a section of the slideand swinging jaw.v
Toenable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I now proceed to describe its construetion and operation.
Similar letters, in the drawings, refer to like parts.
This invention consists of a lever, with a curved and pointed end, and a serrated upper side, and a short curved jaw, pivoted in the upper end of a slide moving on the lever, the convex side of said curved jaw being serrated, and the said slide having, on its rear side, a spur, which takes in the serrations in the upper part of the lever, and on its front side, a springplate, whose function it is to keep the slide upright on the lever.
In the drawing- A represents an iron lever,a foot long, more or less, which has one end, a, curved and pointed, so as to form a rigid jaw.v
Aportion of the upper side of the lever A has serrations; as seen at a'.
Bis a slide, movable along the said lever; havlngn" its upper end, a short, swinging curved jaw, b, of such Shape at the bottom that it cannot` fall backward, or away from the rigid jaw a.
The front or convex jaw b has in it,serrations b.
The slide B has, on its rear side, a pointed spur, b, bent downward slightly', so as to catch in the serrations a, and thus prevent the slide from yielding when the tongs are applied to a pipe.u
-On the front side of the slide B, there is a springplate, b, which rests on the lever A, and keeps the slide erect.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The handle A, hook a, slideB, swinging level' b, spur b", and spring b, all constructed and arranged substantially as described. V
