Description

EZRA nursoiv, or BnooKronT, New YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUSHlNG-JACKS FOR RAILROAD-CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 73,191, dated January 7, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA IIUTsON, of Brockport, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pushing-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of `reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal elevation, and
Fig. 2 a view of the claw at the end of the hinged lever. Y The object of this invention is to move railroad-cars from place to place on the track with a much reduced amount of labor than ordinarily employed for this purpose; and to enable others skilled in the art te make and use it, I will now describe `its construction and operation.
A represents the hand-lever, to 011e end of which is securely bolted the head-piece B. C is the leg or hinged lever, which is hinged to the head-piece B, as represented in the drawings. At the lower end of this lever is the claw d, so formed as to straddle the rail.
It may be observed that I make this claw of steel and put a sufficient edge on it to enable it to bite the rail, and thus prevent it from slipping. There are other devices which7 of course, would effect substantially the same result as this claw; but as this is a minor part of my invention, I will not refer to them individually.
g represents a jaw, hinged to the upper end of head-piece B. This jaw is formed as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with sharp projections 6 e.
The manner of operating my invention isas follows: Force the proj eotions c cinto the rear end of the car, in such a position that the cla-w d will straddle the rail 5 then bear upon lever A. As the car moves forward, take another hold by elevating the lever, and so on until the car is moved to the desired place. In
place of the jaw g, a staple or ring may be secured to the head-piece, which, in the operation of the machine, may slip over a spike bent at righty angle and driven into the car.
Having thus described the principle of my invention", what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
The hinged jaw g, in combination with hinged lever C and hand-lever A, substantially in the manner specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
EZRA lIUTSON. Vitnesses:
T. H. ALEXANDER, C. ALEXANDER.
