Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN WESLEY BoL- ING and J AMES FRANKLIN CLINE, citizens of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Barton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to tools of that class employing a plurality of relatively movable handles, levers or jaws by means of which the tool is operated, and of which class wrenches, pliers and tongs are examples.
Among the objects of the invention is the provision of means whereby the relatively movable handles or the equivalent may be adjusted to facilitate the application of the proper or desired leverage thereto according to varying conditions.
Another object is to provide means aforesaid essentially as an adjustable handle section in combination with means to fasten the handle in adjusted position.
The more specific objects together with advantages of the invention will be disclosed hereinafter as the description of the invention progresses, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein the preferred embodiment is shown.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a tool having our improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the tool; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Throughout the drawings like reference characters designate like or similar parts.
Referring specifically to the drawings 1 and 2 generally designate pivoted sections respectively having jaws 3 and 4C and the section 1 having an operated handle or lever 5. The sections 1 and 2 are pivoted relatively together by means of the pivot member or pin designated 6. The operating lever or handle for section 2 comprises a plurality of members or sections designated 7 and 8, the section 8 being pivoted on a pin or stud 9 intermediate its ends to the section 7. On the section 7 is suitably fastened as in a slot 10 by means of a rivet 11, a plate 12 provided with a plurality of slots or openings 13 arranged in circumferential alinement with respect to the pivot center of pin 9. An arm 14 of the handle section 8 extends over the openings 13 and is rovided with an opening adapted to reglster at times with either of them, a locking pin 15 having an adjusting knob or handle 16 thereon. Suitably fastened upon the arm 14 as by means of a rivet 15 is a blade spring 16 being forked or provided at one end with an elongated slot to provide bifurcated arms 17 to engage grooves or slots 18 of the lockmg member 15 to thus serve as means for supporting the pin from the blade spring. It is to be noted that the arms 17 merely extend into the grooves 18 and that the locking member slides thereon during the adjustment of the parts and constitutes a means to provide for lost motion. The spring blade 16 normally depresses the lock ing member so that it will enter the adjacent or desired slot 13. One of the jaws, for instance the jaw a may be provided with an auxiliary jaw such as 19 which is provided with a serrated or roughened face at 20, and pivoted to the jaw 4 by means of a lug 21 entering a slot 22 of the jaw 4 and a pivot pin 23 passing through the jaw 1 and lug 21.
When the locking member 15 engages the central slot 13, the arm sections 7 and 8 are in substantial alinement and when in a closed position would be practically parallel with arm 5. If it is desired to adjust the relative angle of the handles, locking member 15 through manual engagement with the knob 16 may be pulled away from the arm 14: so as to free the same from the arcuately arranged slots 13. Thereupon section 8 is shifted on its pivot 9 to the desired position and then look pin or member 15 released whereupon the spring 16 forces the same into engagement with the adjacent slot 13 thus locking the same at an angle to the section 7. As thus coupled it will be realized that the desired leverage is had upon operation of the handles 5 and 8 or either of them relatively to the other.
While we have merely shown 3 slots 13, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves thereto or to any specifical number and that other changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our said invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1-- 1. A tool including a plurality of movable sections each having a handle, one of the handles comprising inner and outer pivotally connected sections, the inner section being provided with a plurality of arcuately arranged slots, an arm extending from the outer section, a locking pin mounted on the arm for association with the arcuately arranged slots, a spring cooperating with the locking pin for holding the same in position Within a desired slot and arranged therewith to provide for lost motion during the adjustment of the sections.
2. A tool including a plurality of relatively movable sections, each having a handle, one of said handles comprising inner and outer sections, said outer section being pivoted on said inner section, said inner section being provided With a plurality of arcuately arranged slots, an arm extending from said outer section and having a slot therein adjacent the free end, a locking pin engaged in the slot in the arm and engage- 20 able with the slots in the inner section, a spring secured to said arm, and the free end of said spring being bifurcated and engaged about said pin.
