Letters Patent IVO. 93,743, dated August I7, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN TUCK-CREASING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-.MACHINESl The Schedule referred. to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM IREIss, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tuck-Markers for Sewing-Machines, and I do hereby declare the following to 'be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same,-'ref erence being had to lthe accompanying drawing, figures and letters of reference thereon, making part of this specification.
The di'au'ingr shows my invention attached to a sewing-machine. .t
My invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement ot' parts, whereby I am enabled to make a cheap, simple, eifeotual, and noiseless tucking-apparatus, which can be readily applied to sewing-machines.'
To enable others skilled in the art to make and useV my invention, I will describe the construction and operation thereof.
A represents the bed of a sewing-machine, and
l, the vibrating needle-arm, to which I attach, by
' a clamp-screw, It, a forked piece, a, 'to the upper side of which is pivoted, at g, the rod b.
To the lbed or plate, byascrew, c, I attach a slotted gauge-plate, k, in and upon which the bars i j, which are secured Itogether at one end, slide, and the lower piece j, at its front end, is provided with a projecting knifeedge, and at the endof the bari, is a bearing for- Operation. 'I he operation will be as follows:
'By loosing the clamp-screws c and' f, the bars 'ij and the rocking levercan readily be adjusted from' the tine of the needle for any desired width of tuck, and firmly heldin position by the screw c, and this rod b is clamped lby the screw f, so that the notch c, in the end of the rocking level', will force the cloth` down upon the projecting knife-edge in the bar j, and, as the cloth is fed through the machine, a crease will be made by the conjointaction of the notch c in the v the needle-arm, at its centre of motion; the move-fA ments of all the parts are slight; there is no makinge and breaking of contact of parts, as is the case wherel springs are used, and the apparatus is noiseless and' easy in its operation.
Having thus fully described my invention,
i What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination and arrangement of the clampblock a, rod b, rocking level' c, with its jointed arm and screw, provided with a groove, and the projection on the bar j, constructed and operating substantially as described and speciiied.
j 2. The combination, with the parts aboyedescribed, of the gauge k, for adjusting the apparatus upon the sewing-machine, substantially as described andspecified.
WM. PREISS.
