Description

-Is'AAe/W. BAENUM, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
y IMPROVEMENT |,N'T,UCKCREASER 4Fon.sr-:WING-MAcHINras.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 89,842, dated May 11', 1869.
To all to whom these presents shall come: v
Be it known that I, ISAAC W. BARNUM, of they State, city, and county of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Tuck-Markers for Sewing-Machines; and Idolhereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specilicationVin Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tucker;
and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base-plate,
with the upper parts removed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de` scribe thesame.
` In the drawing, A represents a suitable base-plate, to which all the parts of the instru-` of the tucker by simply loosening and Without iremoving the said screw.
B is a lever, passing through an openin g in an upright, C, of the base-plate, and isf'secured by a thumb-screw, b. At the outer end of the said lever B there is a small hammer, D, havu ing a slit in its face.
P is anv arm, formed in one with the lever B,
and serves toreceive and mollify the force of the sewing-machine, and convey such force to the lever B. v
A number of teeth, 1, 2, 3, 8vo., is attached to or made fast on the base-plate, and it may or may not be adjustable with reference thereto. If to be adjust-able, the teeth are generally placed on a plate, G, which is attached to the base-plate by a small screw or screws in slots, as at f. The hammer D is adjusted to these teeth in making d ifterent-width tucks by means of the thumb-screw b', the same permitting the hammer to be brought over, andrmade to match with any one of these teeth without disturbing the fastening screw, as aforesaid. The adjustment of the plate Gr by its slot will bring any one of the teeth mentioned within the distance of the space between such teeth, thus permitting any adjustment, by the finest gradations, to Wide and narrow tucks.
H is a smoother, to smooth out the cloth preparatory to being acted upon by the creasing mechanism.
I do not contine myself to the specific mode of forming the spring-arm shown in the drawing, as the said spring may be made in various forms, either in one piece with the lever B or separately. V
I claim as my. invention and desire to secureby Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the spring-arm B, hammer or notch D, and yielding arm E with a non-adjustable base-plate, A, and toothed plate G, substantially as specied.
2. Also, in combination with the above, the smoother H, for the purpose set forth.
l ISAAC W. BARNUM.
