Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 28, 1914. Serial No. 869,074.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I SPENCER S. Hons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakhill, in the county of Clay and State of Kansas, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a miter box, and has for its primary object the provision of such a box whereby the saw may be easily adjusted at any angle.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a miter box having an adjustable gage to be used for various work.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawings, in which,

Fig. 9 is an end view of the adjuster block.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the base having the side piece 2 secured thereto and the base being supported upon any suitable object by means of the legs 3. A slot 4 is formed in the side 2 so that the saw may be passed therethrough. A dovetail groove 5 is formed in the base 1 and a similar groove 6 in the side 2. A gage block 7 having a dovetail tongue 8 on the bottom thereof and a similar tongue 9 0n the side thereof is adapted for adjustment on the base, and the tongue 8 entering the groove 5 and the tongue 9 entering the groove 6. A finger 10 is secured to the top of the gage block and points toward a scale strip 11 secured to the side 2. The gage block 7 is provided with a longitudinal bore 7 as more clearly shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, and to the end of the block is secured a plate 8 having a threaded bore therein in alinement with the bore of the block. A bracket 12 having an opening therein is provided at one end of the box and forms a bearing for a shaft 13. This shaft is threaded for its greater length and passes through the plate 8 having the central bore and into the bore 7 of the gage block which is of greater diameter than the shaft. The shaft is vided near the outer end with a collar 9 and the unthreaded portion 10 is adapted to pass through the opening in the bracket 12. A crank handle 14 having a flange 11 formed thereon is secured on the shaft 13 by means of the thumb nut 12 engaging a threaded reduced extension on the shaft. The flange 11 engages the bracket on the side opposite to that of the collar 9. A spring catch 13 is connected to the crank handle 14 and is adapted to engage the bracket 12 for holding the shaft in its adjusted position.
A bar 15 extends beneath the base 1 and is pivoted thereto, as indicated at 16, in Fig. 5 of the drawings. On one end of this bar 15 is secured the saw guide 17 and on the opposite end a similar saw guide 18, having an extension 18, is slidably mounted thereon. The saw guide 18 is provided on the bottom thereof with a pin or projection 19, the purpose of which will be presently described. Secured to the base strip 1 by means of suitable brackets 20 is a strip 21 having the perforations 22 therein and a block 23 is slidably mounted on the strip 21 and is provided with a spring catch 24 having a projection 24 passing through the block 23 and adapted to enter the perforations 22 in the strip 21. This block 23 is provided with an opening 25 therethrough which receives the projection 19 on the bottom of the saw guide 18. A thumb nut 19' is received on the threaded reduced end of the projection 19 for holding the projection in the opening 25 in the block 23.
In constructing the device as described, it will be seen that I have provided an easy adjustment for the saw guides for throwing them into various angles and that the guides securely hold the saw against any movement other than a longitudinal or reciprocatory movement. It will also be seen that I have provided an adjustable gage block which may be adjusted for various works or thicknesses of wood. In adjusting the saw guides the projection 24 is disengaged from the perforation in which it appears in the strip 21 and is adjustable along the strip the desired distance when the projection is allowed to enter another perforation. Having fully described the invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
1. A miter box comprising a support, a bar pivotally connected to the support, a saw guide secured to one end of the bar, a second saw guide slidably mounted on the opposite end of the bar, a lateral extension secured to the second guide and sliding on the bar, a finger depending from the extension, a perforated bar carried by the support, a block having an opening extending longitudinally thereof adjustably mounted on the bar, an extension on the side of the block having an opening to receive the finger, and means for securing the block in adj usted position.
2. A miter box comprising a base, a bar pivotally secured to the base, a saw guide secured on one end of the bar, a second saw guide slidable on the opposite end, said slidable saw guide being provided with a proj ection, a perforated bar carried by the base, a block having an opening therethrough to receive said projection, and a catch carried by the block to engage the perforations in the bar.
