Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
MATHURIN (l. BOBIOHAU, OF MARBLEHEAD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPENTERS GAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,014, dated July 22, 1873; application filed May 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, MATHURIN O. RoBroHAu, of Marblehead, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Uarpen ters Gages, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and convenient means of adjusting the spurs in gages so as to be susceptible of a greater range of work and its adjustment thereto with greater ease and facility;
and it consists in constructing the bar of a T shape and fitting two heads, which freely slide upon the same and are confined at any point by means of a set-screw. One of these heads is of the usual construction, while the other only partially surrounds the bar, its T form allowing itonly to come flush with one side of the same instead of projecting beyond upon all sides, as heretofore. This head also has connected to it a short metal slide carrying a spur, and slidingin a slot or groove out through the bar for about one-third of its length.
By this means the gage is adapted to a greater variety of work, and permits of its use in places where a single head, or one projecting beyond the bar upon all sides, could not be used with the same facility.
Upon the opposite side from the adjustable slide and spur is a stationary spur; also, a similar spur projects from the bar upon its opposite end.
This gage is peculiarly adapted to be used for gaging upon doors and door-casings in the application of the iron butts or hinges.
Figure'l is a perspective view, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of Fig. l at the point represented by the dotted lines X Y.
A is the bar of the gage, which is provided with the adjustable head B and thumb-screw O, of the usual construction. D is an adjustable head, which is held in position by the thumbscrew E. This head I), diii'ers from the former one in that it only partially surrounds the T-shaped bar A, one of its sides being flush with the narrow part of bar A. To this head D is attached a short slide, L, provided witha spur, S. This slide L may be moved back and forth in the slot P, which extends through the bar A for about one-third of its length, and upon one side is faced with metal, which forms a cap, H, upon the end of the bar. This end is provided with a stationary spur, F, while the opposite end is provided with a spur, T, in the usual manner. The cap H forms a guide in gaging.
What I claim is- As an article of manufacture, the above-described gage, composed of the adjustable head B, T-shaped bar A, adjustable head D, slide L, and spur S, operating in slot 1?, in conjunc tion with metal cap H, set-screw E, and spur F, when constructed in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
